🌸 Celebrating International Women's Day & Ovarian Cancer Awareness Day 🌸
This March 8, we honor the strength, resilience, and beauty of women worldwide. 💜 As we celebrate International Women's Day, let’s also shine a light on Ovarian Cancer Awareness Day, reminding all women to prioritize their health and well-being.
🩺 Here are some neat facts about Ovarian Cancer
1️⃣ The “Silent Killer” – Ovarian cancer is often called the silent killer because symptoms are vague and can be mistaken for common issues like bloating or digestive problems.
2️⃣ Early Detection Saves Lives – When detected early (Stage 1), the 5-year survival rate is over 90%, but unfortunately, most cases are diagnosed in later stages when the survival rate drops significantly.
3️⃣ No Reliable Screening Test – Unlike cervical cancer (Pap smear) or breast cancer (mammograms), there is no routine screening test for ovarian cancer. The best way to detect it is through symptom awareness and medical check-ups.
4️⃣ Common Symptoms – Symptoms may include persistent bloating, pelvic pain, frequent urination, loss of appetite, and unexplained fatigue. If these last more than two weeks, consult a doctor.
5️⃣ Genetics Play a Big Role – Women with BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene mutations have a higher risk of developing ovarian cancer. A family history of ovarian, breast, or colorectal cancer also increases the risk.
6️⃣ It’s Not Just an Older Woman’s Disease – While it’s more common in women over 50, ovarian cancer can affect younger women too, including those in their 20s and 30s.
7️⃣ Pregnancy & Birth Control May Lower Risk – Women who have had children and those who take oral contraceptives (birth control pills) for several years have a lower risk of ovarian cancer.
8️⃣ Ovarian Cancer Spreads Quickly – Unlike some cancers, ovarian cancer can spread rapidly within the abdomen, which is why early detection is critical.
