What to know about kyphosis ?

Kyphosis is an abnormal rounding of the upper back. It is a relatively common condition that often develops in adolescence or young adulthood.

Having a small curve in the upper back is normal. Kyphosis is an excessive spinal curve that can cause discomfort and lasting issues throughout the body. Poor posture, abnormalities in the spine, or age-related weakness, can cause kyphosis

Symptoms

Symptoms of kyphosis can include back pain and stiffness in the upper back.

The primary symptom of kyphosis is an abnormal forward curve in the upper part of the spine. It causes the upper back to appear hunched over, with the shoulders rounded forward.
In mild cases, the spinal curve is not always noticeable. In other instances, a person may look as if they are bending forwards.

Kyphosis often occurs without any other symptoms. However, other symptoms can include:
- back pain
- stiffness in the upper back
- a rounded back
- tight hamstrings

Causes

The spine comprises bones called vertebrae that stack on top of each other. This structure is unique in the body and allows the spine to be supportive as well as flexible. It also means the spine is particularly vulnerable to damage.

Kyphosis occurs when the vertebrae in the upper part of the back, called the thoracic region, become wedge-shaped. This causes the spine to curve forward more than usual.

This can happen due to:
- poor posture
- developmental issues
- older age
- abnormal vertebrae shape

Who gets kyphosis?

Kyphosis is a fairly common condition that usually affects adolescents and adults. Some types of kyphosis can occur from birth, but this is rare.

Poor posture is a risk factor for developing some types of kyphosis. This means that kyphosis is more likely to occur in people who adopt a poor posture for long periods, such as frequently working at a computer.

Types of kyphosis

There are several types of kyphosis, including:
1) Postural kyphosis.
This is the most common form of kyphosis. It often occurs in adolescents, when the spine and surrounding muscles develop abnormally. This can be a result of poor posture.
2) Scheuermannโ€™s kyphosis.
This also tends to develop during adolescence, but it can become more severe than postural kyphosis. Doctors do not know what causes this form of kyphosis.
3) Congenital kyphosis.
This occurs when the spine does not develop properly in the womb, causing kyphosis at birth. It can rapidly worsen with age.

Treatments

Treatment will focus on preventing the curve from worsening and restoring normal posture where possible.
Treatment for kyphosis depends on the type and severity of the curve. A doctor will perform physical exams and look at scans to work out the type and severity of a personโ€™s kyphosis to determine the best treatment.

If you are having this kind of condition, no worries we are here to help you. With our experienced chiropractors, skilled physiotherapists and also advanced electrical modalities, we achieve great results in treating pain.

Spine Curvature Disorders

The spine is made up of numerous bones one on top of each other that allow us to bend and twist.

These bones provide a protective cover for the spinal cord, a mix of white and gray matter that contains 31 pairs of spinal nerves. The spine is a central conduit for all the nerve impulses that allow us to function as normal healthy human beings.
The spine is a straight structure when viewed from the back. From the side it appears to curve gently and is designed to both cope with gravity and absorb any shocks.
As with many other parts of the human body, however, there are occasions where deformities in the spine occur.

What are the Main Types of Spine Curvature Disorders?

Normal spine compared with the main types of spinal deformities
When abnormalities of the spine occur, it can mean the body is misaligned or a certain posture is exaggerated. The three main types of spine curvature disorder are:
* Kyphosis: Here the upper back is rounded but abnormally so, usually more than 50 degrees compared to a normal spinal orientation.
* Scoliosis: The curve in the spine is sideways, normally in a c- or s-shape.
* Lordosis: The is a significant curve of the spine in the lower back area with the buttocks seeming more pronounced.

Kyphosis
Kyphosis is characterized by a significant curve in the upper back with the head and shoulders pushed forward considerably. Whilst it doesnโ€™t cause any significant back pain, the stress it puts on areas such as the back of the legs means that standing or sitting for long periods can cause fatigue.
There are a number of causes of kyphosis. It is seen in congenital conditions and is often a symptom of spina bifida. It can also be caused by poor posture, illness that affects the spine such as an infection or tumor, and rarer conditions such as Scheuermannโ€™s disease.
Treatment will vary in accordance with the underlying cause. This may include pain medication as well as physiotherapy to improve muscle strength. An individual with kyphosis might wear a back brace and, in some circumstances and particularly congenital kyphosis.

Scoliosis
Specialist examining scoliosis in a model of a spine and x-ray image
Scoliosis is often characterized by one shoulder being higher than the other.
The cause of scoliosis in many cases is not known but it can occur with conditions such as cerebral palsy or muscular dystrophy. It can also happen because of birth defects and through injury. Symptoms often become more obvious during adolescence when the growth spurt begins.
In many cases of scoliosis, the abnormality of the spine is not significant enough to warrant any major intervention. There may be some monitoring to make sure the condition doesnโ€™t get worse. Certain exercises may be suggested to help improve posture.

Lordosis
With lordosis, there is an excessive inner curvature of the spine close to the lower back. This has the effect of pushing out the buttocks and making them seem more prominent. If a the individual with lordosis lies down, there will be a sizeable gap between the lower back and the floor. The condition can lead to back pain and discomfort.
Lordosis can be caused by a variety of different health issues:
* It might happen as a result of kyphosis.
* It can be a symptom associated with osteoporosis and obesity.
* It can be part of rare condition such as achondroplasia and spondylolisthesis.
Treatment will depend on the severity of the condition. Exercises to strengthen the muscles and improve posture are usually implemented first. Pain killers may be used to control any back pain. In more severe circumstances a back brace may be worn. Surgery is normally a last resort.

Flat Back Syndrome
Flat back syndrome refers to a condition whereby the lower spine has lost some of its normal curvature. It makes the back less flexible and the individual may find it difficult to stand upright properly. Chronic pain is not unusual.
This condition is caused by health problems such as degenerative disc disease. Itโ€™s also seen in some cases of ankylosing spondylitis as well as injuries such as compression fractures.
Most people are treated using physical therapy and by improving posture with some pain medication.

If you are having this kind of condition, no worries we are here to help you. With our experienced chiropractors, skilled physiotherapists and also advanced electrical modalities, we achieve great results in treating pain.

TENDINITIS

Tendinitis (also called tendonitis) is an inflammation or irritation of a tendon, a thick cord that attaches bone to muscle.

Anyone can get tendinitis, but it is more common in adults, especially those over age 40. As tendons age, they tolerate less stress, are less elastic and are easier to tear.

Tendinitis can occur in almost any area of the body where a tendon connects a bone to a muscle. The most common places are:
1.A base of the thumb.
2.Elbow.
3.Shoulder.
4.Hip.
5.Knee.
6.Achilles tendon.

Causes.
Tendinitis is most often caused by repetitive, minor impact on the affected area, or from a sudden more serious injury.

Activities that can cause tendinitis, including:
1.Gardening.
2.Raking.
3.Carpentry.
4.Cleaning house.
5.Shoveling.
6.Painting.
7.Scrubbing.
8.Tennis.
9.Golf.
10.Skiing.
11.Throwing and pitching.
12. Incorrect posture at work or home or poor conditioning before exercise or playing sports also increases a person's risk.

Risk factors.

1.An abnormal or poorly placed bone or joint (such as length differences in your legs or arthritis in a joint) that stresses soft-tissue structures.
2.Stresses from other conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis, gout, psoriatic arthritis, thyroid disorders, or unusual medication reactions.
3.Overuse or doing too much too soon when the tendons aren't used to making a movement or doing the task taken on.
4. Tendinitis is common in "weekend warriors," people that play and exercise hard only on weekends.

Symptoms

1.Pain at the site of the tendon and surrounding area. Pain may gradually build up or be sudden and severe, especially if calcium deposits are present.
2.Loss of motion in the shoulder, called "adhesive capsulitis" or frozen shoulder.

How to avoid Tendinitis?

Take it slow at first. Gradually build up your activity level.
Use limited force and limited repetitions.

Stop if pain occurs. Do something else. Try again later and if pain recurs, stop that activity for the day.

If you experience this sign and symptoms. that continues for more than a week, is severe, or is accompanied by other symptoms, seek medical attention immediately.

Sacroiliac (SI) Joint Pain.

Sacroiliac (SI) joint pain can felt in your low back and buttocks. The pain is caused by damage or injury to the joint between the spine and hip. Sacroiliac pain can mimic other conditions, such as a herniated disc or hip problem.

What is sacroiliac joint pain?

The SI joints are located between the iliac bones and the sacrum, connecting the spine to the hips. The two joints provide support and stability, and play a major role in absorbing impact when walking and lifting. From the back, the SI joints are located below the waist where two dimples are visible.

Strong ligaments and muscles is the one that support the SI joints. There is a very small amount of motion in the joint for normal body flexibility. As we know our age bones become arthritic and ligaments become stiffen. When the cartilage wears down, the bones may rub together causing pain. Our SI joint is a synovial joint that filled with fluid. This type of joint has free nerve endings that can cause chronic pain if the joint degenerates or does not move properly.

Other terms for SI joint pain include: SI joint dysfunction, SI joint syndrome, SI joint strain and SI joint inflammation.

What are the symptoms?

The signs and symptoms of SI pain start in the lower back and buttock, and may radiate to the lower hip, groin or upper thigh. While the pain is usually one sided, it can occur on both sides. You may also experience numbness or tingling in the leg or a feeling of weakness in the leg.

Symptoms may worsen with sitting, standing, sleeping, walking or climbing stairs. Often the SI joint is more painful sitting or sleeping on the affected side. Some people have difficulty riding in a car or standing, sitting or walking too long. Pain can be worse with transitional movements (going from sit to stand), standing on one leg or climbing stairs.

What are the causes?

The SI joint can become painful when the ligaments become too loose or too tight. This can occur as the result of a fall, work injury, car accident, pregnancy and childbirth, or hip/spine surgery (laminectomy, lumbar fusion).

Sacroiliac joint pain can occur when movement in the pelvis is not the same on both sides. Uneven movement may occur when one leg is longer or weaker than the other, or with arthritis in the hip or knee problems. Autoimmune diseases, such as ankylosingspondyloarthropathy, and biomechanical conditions, such as wearing a walking boot following foot/ankle surgery or non-supportive footwear, can lead to degenerative sacroiliitis.

If you are suffering from these symptoms, no worries we are here to help you. With our experienced chiropractors, skilled physiotherapists and also advanced electrical modalities, we achieve great results in treating pain.

5 COMMON TYPES OF SPONDYLOLISTHESIS

Spondylolisthesis is a spinal condition in which one of the vertebrae bone of the spine slips out of place in relation to the segment below. However, do you know that there are several types of Spondylolisthesis? Here are the common types of Spondylolisthesis:

1.Dysplastic Spondylolisthesis
This is a congenital birth defect. This occurs due to hypoplasia of the upper sacrum or the neural arch of L5 vertebrae bone in which allows a forward translation of L5 on the sacrum to occur.

2.Isthmic Spondylolisthesis
This usually not present in birth. This occurs due to the defect in the pars interarticularis. It is seldom appeared before the age of 4. The translation usually occurs before the age of 20, and is rapidly progressing between the age of 10 and 15. The defect of the pars interarticularis can be due to a stress fracture or an elongated pars interarticularis.

3.Degenerative Spondylolisthesis
This is more common in people over the age of 50. This occurs due to the degenerative changes and weakness of the soft tissues structures that provide stability to the corresponding vertebrae bones such as the ligaments, joints and the intervertebral disc. It usually occurs at the level of L4-L5 or L3-L4.

4.Traumatic Spondylolisthesis
This can occurs to people from all age group. It occurs due to fracture of the bilateral pars interarticularis. The vertebrae segment is unable to withstand the sudden high impact or sheer force caused by the trauma, leading to the forward translation of the vertebrae bone due to the segmental instability from the fracture.

5.Pathological Spondylolisthesis
Occurrence of this is rare. It arises from a variety of bone disease such as Paget disease, tuberculosis, Giant cell tumour and tumour metastases.

Itโ€™s probably safe to say that most of us at some point in time have woken up with neck pain or can recall an event or injury that resulted in neck pain. Neck pain usually arises from muscles, tendons, and ligaments commonly referred to as the soft tissues and around the cervical spine.

Muscle strain and resulting muscle spasm is often caused by an underlying neck problem, such as spinal stenosis, arthritis, or disc degeneration and can be triggered from trauma but frequently occurs insidiously, or for no obvious or identifiable reason.

Whether your neck pain is from a chronic condition or if you've just woken up with a stiff neck, the following tips should help you experience less pain.

Follow these 10 tips to protect your neck from injury:

1. Try a new pillow.
๏ฟฝIn terms of comfort and support for your neck while you sleep, there are many options and you may need some trial and error to find what works best for you. As a general rule, it is best to use a pillow that keeps your cervical spine in neutral alignmentโ€”meaning, the natural curve of your neck is supported and maintained.๏ฟฝ
There are a number of options, and what works best for you will largely be determined on the cause of your neck problem as well as your sleep preferences. Here are a few examples:
* Some people find that their neck pain decreases when they lie down on their back with the head supported by a relatively flat pillow, or with an orthopedic pillow that has a deeper depression where the head lies and extra support under the neck.
* Other people find that support with a pillow when side-lying is more comfortable.
* Some prefer sitting in a recliner, or in an adjustable bed with the upper part of the body at an incline. In this reclining position, they can use a small or relatively flat pillow.

If you're like most people, you change your sleep position during the night, so be sure to have a pillow or more than one pillow that works for each of your sleep positions. ๏ฟฝ
2. Sleep on your back if you can.
๏ฟฝIn general, sleeping on your back is the best position to let your entire spine rest comfortably. Some people with neck problems find it helps to sleep on their back and place a pillow under each arm, with the idea that supporting each arm takes strain off the neck.

Some people with spinal arthritis or stenosis may find that sleeping at a slight incline is easier, so they add a foam wedge pillow to their bed and/or switch to an adjustable bed.๏ฟฝ๏ฟฝIf you prefer to sleep on your side, make sure your pillow is not too high usually around 4 to 6 inches thick, depending on the density of the pillow material and the distance between the neck and point of the shoulder. This height should typically prevent your head and neck from turning or bending unnaturally to either side. ๏ฟฝ
3. Make sure your computer monitor is at eye level.
๏ฟฝSit comfortably in front of your computer and close your eyes. When you open them, your gaze should be directly in the top-third of your computer screen. If you find you have to look down, you need to raise your monitor up.

Laptops most often require you to angle your head downward to see the screen, so connecting your laptop to a separate monitor, or screen, is often very helpful.๏ฟฝ
4. Avoid neck strain from texting.
๏ฟฝTexting or looking down at your cell phone or mobile device for any length of time puts excessive strain on your neck. ๏ฟฝ๏ฟฝOver time, the added stress on the joints, ligaments, and discs in your neck can lead to premature degenerative changes in your neck. Tips to avoid neck damage from texting include raising the phone or mobile device to eye level, minimizing texting time, resting your hands and device on a pillow, and taking frequent breaks.

5. Use a headset.
๏ฟฝIf you spend a lot of time on the phone, be sure to avoid tilting your head to the side or cradling your phone in the crook of your neck.

Any type of hands-free device, such as a headset or ear piece, is a great way to talk on the phone without being tempted to hold your phone incorrectly. There is also a newer device that lays around your neck so you can keep it on all day.

6. Exercise and stretch your neck.
๏ฟฝKeep your neck muscles strong by doing short sets of strengthening and stretching exercises throughout the day. One of the simplest exercises to do is the chin tuck exercise
๏ฟฝThis exercise helps strengthen the muscles that pull the head into alignment over the shoulders. It also stretches the scalene and suboccipital muscles.๏ฟฝ
7. Stay well hydrated.
๏ฟฝYet another reason to drink lots of water during the day is to nourish and hydrate the discs the spongy structures that lie between the vertebrae in your neck. These discs are made up of mostly water, so staying well hydrated will help keep your discs pliable and strong.๏ฟฝ
8. Carry weight evenly.
๏ฟฝA common mistake people make is carrying a heavy purse or briefcase on one side of their body. This uneven load can cause your shoulders to become uneven, straining your neck muscles.

First, try to lighten your load by taking only your essentials in your purse or briefcase, and make an effort to keep your shoulders level at all times when you carry it. Consider using a backpack that distributes weight evenly across both of your shoulders.๏ฟฝ
9. Maintain supportive posture.
๏ฟฝPoor posture can cause neck pain by straining muscles and ligaments that support the neck, resulting in injury over time.

The head-and-shoulders-forward posture is the most common example of poor posture that contributes to neck pain. This occurs when the neck slants forward, placing the head in front of the shoulders.
๏ฟฝFor every inch the head shifts forwards, an extra 10 pounds is added to the muscles in the upper back and neck. A 5-inch forward shift results in 50 extra pounds of force. Remember, keep your chin tucked inward to avoid this.
๏ฟฝThis posture causes the upper back to slump forward as well, placing a strain on the entire spine. ๏ฟฝ
10. Relieve trigger-point pain.
๏ฟฝIrritation to the facet joints of the lower cervical vertebrae in your neck can result in muscle trigger point pains. Trigger points are small knots in the muscle or fascia which is a layer of tissue under your skin and around the muscle that can lead to pain.
๏ฟฝThere are certain massages you can do yourself to work these trigger points and lessen the pain.

Bonus tip: Put your phone away.

Most of us don't realize how much time we spend looking down at our phone with our head and neck in a flexed forward position. This bent-forward position puts a great deal of added stress on bones, joints, and ligaments in your neck that simply weren't designed for it.

Putting your phone away, or holding it in a way that keeps your neck aligned on top of your shoulders, is one of the simplest and best changes you can make to help your neck.

We hope the above tips will help you in your efforts to reduce and prevent neck pain.
