💬 “I wish I’d known this sooner…”
If you or someone you care about is experiencing early menopause or Premature Ovarian Insufficiency (POI), this new factsheet is for you.
📄 10 New Things About Premature Ovarian Insufficiency (POI)
This factsheet breaks down the latest evidence and insights about POI - what it is, how it’s diagnosed, how it affects your health, and what options are available.
Here are some things you might not know:
1️⃣ POI is more common than we thought - affecting around 4 in every 100 women.
2️⃣ Over 100 genes are now linked to POI, though most women still won’t get a clear cause.
3️⃣ Only one blood test (high FSH) is needed to make a diagnosis - helping reduce delays.
4️⃣ You can have risk factors like family history, but there’s no guaranteed way to know who will get POI.
5️⃣ POI impacts fertility, but egg freezing and donor eggs can be options.
6️⃣ It can affect your muscles, bones, brain and heart - but healthy habits and hormone therapy can help.
7️⃣ A balanced diet, staying active, and not smoking all make a difference.
8️⃣ Personalised hormone therapy supports both symptoms and long-term health.
9️⃣ POI can affect sexual wellbeing - supportive, whole-person care makes a big difference.
🔟 There’s limited evidence for supplements and herbal remedies - they shouldn’t replace hormone therapy.

🌟 It’s one of several new resources created to support the 2024 POI Guideline. Co-designed with women, for women, these resources were developed by the Monash Centre for Health Research and Implementation (MCHRI) - a collaboration between Monash University, Monash Health, and women with lived experience.
