Participant: Thank you, Dr. Chong, for sharing your insights. While I wasn't entirely sure of the objective initially, I found the session to be a valuable introduction to counseling or therapy. It helped me realize that these practices are not just about listening or having unattainable skills but involve a framework that can be learned by those interested. When we feel lost, being exposed to abstract concepts or ungraspable ideas might provide temporary emotional relief, but it often leaves us feeling even more adrift without something tangible to hold onto. A structured framework, however, offers a sense of confidence and security. It’s encouraging for those of us keen to explore treatment, whether for our own growth, to support others, or simply out of genuine curiosity. Thank you again, Dr. Chong, for this enlightening session.
Me: Yup, a strong theory is one that has been tested repeatedly and continues to stand up to scrutiny. The theorist lays the philosophical foundation, dedicating immense effort to develop the ideas that guide our understanding. As users of the theory, we build upon this foundation, applying and testing it in various contexts.
I hope that this sharing on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) will not only benefit counseling and psychology practitioners but also reach the wider public. By doing so, we can contribute to improving mental health awareness and well-being on a broader scale.
To briefly explain, a theory is built through a structured process. It begins with observing and identifying a problem or phenomenon. For example, ACT was developed to address the challenges of psychological rigidity and avoidance, which often hinder mental health. Through research and clinical observation, concepts are proposed, hypotheses are formulated, and rigorous testing is conducted to validate the theory. Over time, as evidence accumulates, the theory evolves, becoming more refined and applicable.
In the case of ACT, its principles—such as fostering psychological flexibility through acceptance and commitment to values-based actions—have been tested extensively and shown to be effective in various settings. As students and practitioners, it is our role to continue applying, testing, and sharing these principles to maximize their impact.
By increasing public awareness of ACT, we can empower individuals to incorporate its tools, like mindfulness and clarification, into their daily lives. This not only enhances mental health but also enriches their overall quality of life. Let’s work together to bring these valuable insights to a wider audience.
