Tawakkal Specialist Hospital is located in the heart of Kuala Lumpur city, which is the capital of Malaysia. The Twin Tower (KLCC) and the Kuala Lumpur Tower (KL Tower) are the main fascinated view from our hospital. We are within close proximity to the National Heart Institute, National Blood Bank, Institute of Medical Research and the National Library and surrounded by many shopping malls and well known 5 star hotels. TSH was officially established in 7 March1984 by a group of doctors with only 66 beds. KPJ TWKL is part of the largest chain of private hospitals under the flagship of KPJ Healthcare Bhd. Over the past 20 years, Tawakkal Specialist Hospital has grown successfully in terms of size and manpower. Today we have more than 70 resident, sessional and visiting Consultants, supported by a strong and dedicated staff of more than 600 employees.

KPJ Healthcare Marks Milestone with Kidney Transplant at Tawakkal Specialist Hospital

A groundbreaking moment for KPJ Healthcare and Tawakkal Specialist Hospital (TSH).

On 24 January 2026, our clinical team successfully performed KPJ Healthcare’s first kidney transplant in recent years, marking a significant leap forward in advanced tertiary care.

Tawakkal Specialist Hospital previously performed a small number of renal transplant procedures in the 1980s under the leadership of the late Datuk Dr Hussein Awang. This recent achievement represents the revival and formalisation of the hospital’s Kidney Transplant Programme within the KPJ Healthcare network.

This historic case involved a living-related kidney donation, in which a devoted husband donated his left kidney to his wife, who had been on hemodialysis for End Stage Kidney Disease (ESKD).

The donor underwent a left laparoscopic nephrectomy, performed with precision to ensure a safe and minimally invasive retrieval of the kidney. The procedure was a success, and the wife is now no longer dependent on hemodialysis — giving her renewed life, health, and hope.

The transplant was led by our Transplant Surgeons — Dr Norman Dublin, Prof Dr Azad Hassan Abdul Razack, and Dr Noor Ashani Md Yusoff — together with Consultant Nephrologist Dr Muhammad Iqbal Abdul Hafidz. They were supported by a multidisciplinary team including anesthesiologists Dr Abdul Hakim Mohammad @ Ma’asom, Dr Ramona Maya Paran, critical care experts, nursing and allied health professionals, ensuring seamless coordination throughout the process.

This milestone marks the official beginning of TSH’s Kidney Transplant Programme, strengthening our position as a leading centre for advanced renal services within KPJ Healthcare.
