November 10th marks world KCN day. It is a day designated to raising awareness and educating others of this medical condition. Keratoconus which translates to “cone shaped cornea” occurs in 1 in every 2000 people. It occurs when the cornea becomes progressively thinner causing a cone like bulge to develop. This results in symptoms of blur vision and sensitivity to light. Treatment includes halting progression of the disease with cornea cross linking followed by visual rehabilitation with glasses or specialty contact lenses. Advanced cases may require a corneal transplant.
