Today was a powerful reminder of why I do what I do. As a lawyer who defends insurance companies, my role is often seen in purely financial terms: challenging exaggerated claims and ensuring settlements are fair. But at the heart of every case is a person.

My client, Mohd.Hakim, a man who felt wrongly assigned total blame for an accident due to a shoddy police investigation, was one of them. My duty was to the insurance company paying my fee, but my focus in that courtroom was entirely on him. I presented our case firmly, demonstrating to the judge the critical oversights in the evidence against him.

After the trial, something unexpected and deeply moving happened. This man, who owed me nothing, was so profoundly grateful that he insisted on asking for my shoe and shirt size, wanting to give me a gift of a running shoe and sports attire. I was completely taken aback. The greatest reward, however, was a gesture of respect from his culture: he bowed and kissed my hand. In that moment, the corporate nature of my work fell away, and I was simply a lawyer who had fought for someone who felt unheard. I am truly humbled and honoured.
