The Clinical Research Centre (CRC) and Oncology Team of SGH are proud to collaborate with AVANTSAR Sdn Bhd(R&D arm of Sarawak Oil Palms Bhd) and Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) on the ECaPPE trial — a clinical study investigating two innovative palm-oil-based creams formulated by AVANTSAR for the treatment of hand-foot syndrome, a common and painful skin toxicity affecting many chemotherapy patients.

👨‍⚕️ Led by Dr Voon Pei Jye (Medical Oncologist) and King Teck Long (CRC Pharmacist), and supported by the dedicated CRC and Oncology teams at SGH, the trial recruited 135 cancer patients over 2 years.

🧴 Results are promising:

✅ Significant improvement in symptoms

✅ Faster recovery and reduced severity

✅ Better quality of life

✅ Proven safety for cancer patients

This study reinforces SGH CRC’s commitment to research that makes a real difference for patients—and proudly showcases Sarawakian innovation in healthcare.

Yesterday, we had the pleasure of welcoming the delegation from the National Cardiovascular Centre Harapan Kita, Indonesia to Kuching, Sarawak led by Dr Bambang Widyantoro. Their visit also covered the Sarawak Heart Centre. It was a fruitful visit with discussion on setting up of clinical research centres and understanding on the clinical research ecosystem in both countries.

🌏 Heart2Miss Presented as Late-Breaking Science at European Society of Cardiology Heart Failure Congress 2025

Congratulations to Dr. Diana Foo Hui Ping & team at Human Physiology Laboratory Clinical Research Centre Sarawak General Hospital (CRC SGH) for presenting the Heart2Miss study during the headline Late-Breaking Science session at European Society of Cardiology Heart Failure Congress 2025.

Heart2Miss is a proof-of-concept, community-based triage model using AI-powered handheld cardiac ultrasound to screen 985 high-risk diabetes patients in primary care—where echocardiography is often unavailable.

The programme introduced an innovative task-shifting strategy by training underemployed bioscience graduates to become mobile community sonographers. This approach unlocks the untapped talent and strengthen diagnostic capacity in the community without expanding the clinical workforce. The hub-spoke-intermediary model alleviates the burden on tertiary care while ensuring that primary care remains adequately supported.

What Heart2Miss demonstrates:
• Empowering new healthcare workforce from untapped talent
• Enabling early heart failure detection in underserved diabetes primary care clinics
• Reducing specialist referral burden
• Building scalable, equitable care models for the community

This milestone showcases the innovation led by the Human Physiology Laboratory at CRC SGH, advancing diagnostics, equity, and capacity building in real-world settings.

🎥 Dr. Diana Foo was also invited to share the study in an interview with Radcliffe Cardiology:

Our Story

The Clinical Research Centre at Sarawak General Hospital (CRC SGH) is the third CRC established by the Ministry of Health (MOH) as part of the 36 hospital CRCs under the Institute of Clinical Research (ICR). It was established is 2003 and its first Head of Unit was Dr Kui-Hian SIM. While it is aligned with the greater vision and mission of the ICR, it also aims to foster closer clinical research and cooperation in Malaysia by providing assistance in research proposals and writing, research funding and grant applications. CRC-SGH organizes training workshops in biostatistics and research methodology, Good Clinical Practice certification courses and assists in presentations at local and international scientific meetings. Following the increase in international multicenter clinical trials, especially in the fields of cardiovascular disease and oncology, CRC SGH improved its facilities and support services to cater for early phase clinical trials. CRC SGH is now located in a purpose-built one stop clinical trials facility located over three levels of the new CRC building located at the Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) to cover clinical, laboratory, administrative and archiving services for clinical research. SGH is a 1000-bedded tertiary referral centre of the Ministry of Health for Sarawak, Malaysia. Our CRC SGH (research) laboratory, located within the CRC building, is MS ISO/IEC 17025: 2017 and MS ISO 15189: 2014 accredited for pharmaceutical and medical testing activities; respectively. The CRC SGH (research) ward obtained provisional licence from National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency (NPRA) to conduct early phase clinical trials. CRC SGH also has a satellite site with a research ward and molecular biology laboratory at Sarawak Heart Center (SHC) to cater for bioavailability/ bioequivalence (BABE) activities and molecular testing activities for clinical trials.
