HEALTHY HEART NUTRITION #6:REDUCE YOUR RISK - Today I want to shift gears and talk about how you can Reduce Your Risk Factors for Cardiovascular Diseases including heart attack, stroke, and high blood pressure. Increased body fat especially abdominal fat around the intestines detected with an increased waist circumference contributes to inflammation and atherosclerosis (see slide). A waist size greater than 42 inches in a man or 35 inches in a woman increases your risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Smoking causes oxidation and inflammation and restricts blood flow to the heart. Lack of exercise leads to a loss of muscle as you age with an increase in body fat as does a lack of protein. You need the right amount of protein at every meal and after exercise to maintain your muscles including your heart muscle. Stop smoking, eat a Heart Healthy Diet with colorful fruits and vegetables, fiber, fish or fish oil supplements, and plant proteins including soy to keep your heart healthy with Balanced Nutrition and a Healthy Active Lifestyle!!!

HEALTHY HEART NUTRITION #4: ARTERY INFLAMMATION- Hardening of the Coronary Arteries is caused by inflammation in the walls of these blood vessels over many years leading to heart disease (see slide). Arteries respond to inflammation by growing collections of immune cells, oxidized cholesterol carrying proteins, smooth muscle fibers and cellular debris called a Plaque. A local inflammation and continued entry of cholesterol grows the Plaque as it progressively narrows the blood vessels. Other immune cells form bone in the walls of the blood vessels which can be seen on a Chest CT Scan. The amount of calcium in the artery wall indicates that there can be severe inflammation that is stable or unstable. Inside the blood vessels, there is an ongoing inflammation which can lead to blood leaking from the Plaque forming a solid blood clot that blocks the artery and blood flow to the heart muscle during a Heart Attack. In many cases a severe heart attack requires immediate emergency resuscitation. Inflammation is the link between overweight and abdominal obesity increasing the risk for heart disease and stroke, but you can decrease inflammation and your risk for these diseases with Balanced Nutrition and a Healthy Active Lifestyle!!!
