Press Statement :
Provide Crucial Progressive Allowances for Doctors in East Malaysia.

MMA Sarawak Branch fully supports the call to the Federal Government by the Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) President, Datuk Dr Thirunavukarasu Rajoo, not to cut the Regional Incentive Allowance (Bayaran Insentif Wilayah (BIW))for government doctors serving in Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan.
A new scheme like the Public Service Remuneration System (SSPA) should be progressive and not retrogressive by increasing the BIW and not decreasing it for the reasons alluded to in the MMA Press Statement on 19.12.2025.

MMA Sarawak also calls on the Federal Government to provide the transfer allowance for contract doctors reporting for duty in East Malaysia due to the high costs involved. Transferring from Peninsular Malaysia to East Malaysia is more complicated and expensive compared to transferring within Peninsular Malaysia. There are flight tickets and forwarding agents to be paid which costs thousands of Ringgit Malaysia. Young doctors at the lower end of the payscale (with possibly loans to repay, parents/younger siblings to be supported financially) would be imposed an additional financial burden if they were to finance their own transfer costs from Peninsular Malaysia to East Malaysia. The absence of this transfer allowance would further disincentivise doctors from Peninsular Malaysia to accept being posted to East Malaysia.
To be consistent with the spirit of the Madani Government, MMA Sarawak calls for these crucial allowances to be provided and increased.

MMA Sarawak Branch Chairman

MMA Sarawak and SPMPS had a Zoom meeting engagement with Sarawak GPs regarding SCHB and SAFHIS issues from 4pm to 5.10pm on 8.11.25 Saturday chaired by me and attended by Dr Liew Shan Fap (Sarawak PPSMMA rep and SPMPS Chairman), Dr Lau Bik Liang, Dr Kon Ka Hin (MMA Sarawak), Kenneth Tan, Dr Peter Tang (SPMPS).
About 41 people attended.

Following this discussion, MMA Sarawak and SPMPS
1) had an urgent informal discussion at the sidelines of the Sarawak Public Health Master Plan 2050 meeting with Sarawak Health Director Dr Veronica Lugah and Sarawak Health Deputy Director Dr Azlee Bin Ayub. Dr Veronica advised MMA Sarawak and SPMPS to meet Dr Azlee first for a discussion
2) had a Hybrid Meeting chaired by Dr Azlee Bin Ayub and attended by CKAPS Sarawak Head KPPK Dr Asmah (and her team) at the Sarawak Health Department Headquarters (HQ) on 5.12.25 from 3pm to 5.20pm. Some proposals were discussed and subsequently presented at the next meeting on 8.12.25 with Dr Veronica and team.
3) had a Joint Sarawak Health Department (JKNS)-MMA Sarawak-SPMPS Consultative Hybrid Meeting at the JKNS HQ on 8.12.25 at 3.30pm to 6pm with Dr Veronica, Dr Azlee, Dr Asmah and the JKNS team.
The main conclusion of the meeting is for GPs to first apply to join the SCHB and SAFHIS initiatives by the Sarawak Government (for those GPs who have not done so yet). Subsequently, the JKNS team will assess and give feedback to the respective GPs regarding their application.

MMA Sarawak wish to thank Dr Veronica, Dr Azlee, Dr Asmah (despite being on MC) and the JKNS team for spending many precious hours to discuss about issues related to Sarawak GPs.

Dr Christine Lee Mui Fong, Consultant Obstetrician and Gynecologist gave the UNIMAS-MMA Sarawak Datu Dr Sengupta Lecture on 28.11.25 entitled Ectopic Pregnancy : When Embryo Makes a Wrong Turn. There were around 150 people present comprising mainly of the Final Year UNIMAS Medical Students.

It is important to consider ectopic pregnancy as a possibility in a woman in reproductive age who presents with abdominal pain (unless obviously pregnant with an intrauterine pregnancy). Urine Pregnancy Test kits are easily available and should be routinely done when a woman in reproductive age presents with abdominal pain of unknown origin. Good ultrasound scanners are also widely available in this day and age to assist with the diagnosis. This would hopefully reduce the tragedy of missing a patient with ectopic pregnancy.

The UNIMAS-MMA Sarawak Datu Dr Sengupta Lecture Series started on 1.7.2011.
The late Professor Datu Dr Prabir Ranjan Sengupta was born on 30.6.1936 in Negeri Sembilan and passed away on 7.7.2020 in Kuala Lumpur.
He was the 1st Professor of Surgery of. UNIMAS.
He was also the 1st Malaysian who took over as Head of Surgery in Sarawak after the expatriate surgeon left.
He was a very skillful surgeon and he trained many surgeons in Sarawak.
Besides his busy official work duties, he also found time to serve in MMA as the
Chairman of MMA Sarawak Branch in 1978-79 and then became the first doctor from MMA Sarawak to serve as the National MMA President in 1981-82
His dedication to serve people in places where there is a shortage of specialist doctors like Sarawak is something to be emulated.

On behalf of MMA Sarawak I would like to thank :
1)Dr Christine for her lecture.
2) Professor Asri Bin Said (Dean of the UNIMAS Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences) and his team for their support and collaboration with MMA Sarawak

Report: Roundtable on Community Engagement & Preventive Healthcare (19 November 2025)

I am honoured to represent Datuk Dr. Kalwinder Singh Khaira at the Roundtable on Community Engagement & Preventive Healthcare held on 19 November 2025 at the Sheraton Kuching Hotel. The event’s Guest of Honour, Deputy Premier of Sarawak Prof. Sim Kui Hian, was represented by YB Michael Tiang Ming Tee, Deputy Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government II. MMA Sarawak Committee Member, Dr Pravind Narayanan, represented MMA President Datuk Dr. Thirunavukarasu Rajoo.

The roundtable convened senior representatives from government agencies, healthcare institutions, NGOs, and professional bodies to deliberate on strengthening the Social Determinants of Health (SDoH) in Sarawak.

Discussions centred on building collaborative frameworks, enhancing community engagement, and aligning preventive health strategies with regional best practices. Key sessions included expert presentations, focused dialogue on Sarawak’s 5-year screening plan, and the development of preliminary consensus recommendations. These outcomes will contribute towards shaping policy directions and informing the agenda for the 2026 Preventive Health Forum.

Overall, the event provided valuable insights and reinforced the importance of multi-sector partnerships in advancing preventive healthcare in Sarawak.

#谨此哀悼 #永怀感恩|Since the passing of my beloved mother, Puan Sri Datin Amar Sim Lim Su Kheng, on 17 November 2025 (Monday), my family and I have been surrounded by an outpouring of condolences, prayers, and quiet acts of kindness.

Every message (WhatsApp, social media, newspapers), every wreath, every tribute, and every step taken to visit us – from all walks of life, and from Sarawak and overseas – carried a depth of love and respect for my mother that touched us deeply.

In the heaviest moments of grief, your warmth has been the light that helped us stand.

As a son, and on behalf of my whole family, I offer our sincere and heartfelt thanks to all who reached out, who came to our home, and who accompanied us through the final farewell.

My mother lived a life without grand gestures, yet she possessed a gentle greatness that left deep marks on all who knew her.

She grew up with little, but she never allowed hardship to harden her heart. Even in difficult times, she held fast to kindness, sincerity, and humility.

It was these quiet virtues that earned her the respect and love of many.

Now she has left us peacefully. The sorrow is deep, yet in these days of mourning, as friends and loved ones came one after another, as tears were shared and comforting words were spoken, we came to understand something profound.

Although my mother has journeyed on, her love, her kindness, and her quiet strength remain alive in the hearts of many.

We also wish to express our deepest gratitude to the many relatives (local, outside Kuching, Perth) and friends who worked tirelessly to help us through the arrangements.

To the entire team at Kuching Nirvana Memorial Park, and to 三圣佛堂住持佛声法师、监院觉贵法师, the Dharma propagation team of Kuching Sam Sing Tong Buddhist Kuching and the various Buddhist organizations in Kuching, thank you for giving my mother a final journey that was dignified, complete, and peaceful.

#怀着深切悲痛悼念我们挚爱的母亲| We are in deep grief over the passing of our beloved mother, Puan Sri Datin Amar LIM Su Kheng (20.3.1942 - 17.11.2025) at the family home this evening, surrounded by her loved ones.

I lost a mother who gave me unconditional love throughout my whole life. Frugal on herself (always reminded us she walked bare footed to school during WW2) but always generous with her motherly love to relatives, friends, communities and the NGO charities close to her heart.

Not just a politician wife to Tan Sri Datuk Amar SIM Kheng Hong (held the 1st Vice President 1 of Sarawak Badan Amal Tenaga Isteri-Isteri , various posts within SUPP and various NGOs) but also mother to a doctor-and-politician. Over the years, she understood with compassion regarding our long hours at work and being away from family.

As a grandmother, she showered her grandchildren with unconditional love, devoting so much time on Enson and Simson’s upbringing and schooling, and instilling in them the family values and love for Sarawak.

Mummy, you will be deeply missed by every one of us.

Forever grateful to:
❇️ the prayers from relatives and friends
❇️ the support of immediate relatives, close family friends & palliative cares from Oncology SGH, Two Three Lodge, and iCare Home Nursing
❇️ the understanding of my colleagues, friends, all the different communities in Sarawak, allowing me to scale back my daily schedules over the last 2 months so I could spend precious time at my mum’s bedside.

Wake will be @ our family home:

Funeral arrangement will be advised shortly.

// 怀着深切悲痛悼念我们挚爱的母亲潘斯里拿汀阿玛沈林素卿,于2025年11月17日(生于1942年3月20日)在家中于亲人陪伴下安详离世。

When Professions Play : The Story of the Inter-professional Games 2025
By Dr Yau May Yann, Hon. Treasurer & MMA Sarawak IPG Games Co-Ordinator

The Inter-professional Games 2025 organised by Ultimate Professional Centre (UPC) unfolded as a vibrant celebration of sportsmanship, unity, and professional camaraderie across Sarawak. Spanning from July to September 2025, this eagerly anticipated multi-sport event brought together professionals from diverse fields who traded their office attire for sports gear — all in the spirit of teamwork, wellness, and friendly competition.
The Games reached a memorable crescendo with a grand closing ceremony on 8 November 2025 at the Sarawak Club, Kuching, where cheers, laughter, and applause echoed in celebration of both victory and fellowship.
Eleven professional bodies (RISM, IKM, MIA, AAS, SPS, MMA, MIP, SIAS, PAM, IEM, SVA) took part in this year’s Games, each showcasing their competitive spirit and enthusiasm across a variety of sporting disciplines, including darts, pickleball, futsal, golf, bowling and badminton. From the precision of dart throws to the finesse of badminton rallies, every event highlighted not only skill and passion but also the unifying power of sport in bridging professions and building friendships.
After months of exhilarating contests and spirited performances, the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) once again rose to claim the title of Overall Champion, continuing its proud tradition of dominance and consistency over the years. Their unwavering teamwork and sporting excellence reaffirmed their long-standing reputation as the team to beat. The Royal Institution of Surveyors Malaysia (RISM) followed closely as the first runner-up, while the Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) celebrated a historic milestone by securing third place for the very first time — a remarkable achievement that reflected their growing strength, determination, and unity.
Yet, beyond the scoreboards and medals, the true triumph of the Inter-professional Games 2025 lay in the bonds forged and the talents discovered along the way. Professionals who once crossed paths only in boardrooms or conferences now found common ground on the field — cheering for teammates, celebrating small victories and embracing the joy of play.
The success of the Games stands as a shining reflection of UPC’s vision to nurture interprofessional unity, wellness, and collaboration through sport. The 2025 edition not only strengthened ties among Sarawak’s professional communities but also reminded all participants that while professions may differ, the spirit of teamwork, perseverance and friendship knows no boundaries.
As the final cheers faded and the trophies were lifted high, the Inter-Professional Games 2025 left behind more than just memories of competition, it left a legacy of togetherness, inspiration, and the promise of even greater camaraderie in the years to come.
