🌕🏮 Chap Goh Mei Lantern Riddle Traditions

Chap Goh Mei (十五暝 / 元宵节), the fifteenth and final night of the Lunar New Year, is a celebration of light, reunion, and playful wit. As the first full moon of the year rises bright and round, homes and streets are adorned with glowing lanterns — symbols of hope, clarity, and new beginnings.

One of the most charming customs of the night is 猜灯谜 — guessing riddles written on lanterns. Families and friends gather beneath the moon, reading poetic clues tied to the lanterns, teasing their minds while enjoying laughter and festive snacks. Traditionally, these riddles were clever wordplays, classical references, or character puzzles (“打一字”, “打一成语”), testing both intelligence and cultural literacy.

In spirit, lantern riddles are more than entertainment — they represent light illuminating wisdom. Under the full moon, as lanterns glow red and gold, minds too are invited to shine.

🏮 🌕 元宵节灯谜传统简介

元宵节，也就是 Chap Goh Mei，是农历新年的第十五晚，也是整个新年庆祝的最后一天。当天晚上月亮最圆最亮，家家户户都会挂上红灯笼，象征团圆、光明和新的开始。

其中一个很有趣的传统就是 猜灯谜。人们把谜语写在灯笼上，让大家一边赏月，一边动脑筋。谜语内容可以是打一字、打一成语，或者一些带点双关语、谐音的巧妙文字游戏。猜对了，开心一下；猜不到，也是一种乐趣。

在马来西亚，很多地方都会在庙宇、会馆或商场举办灯谜活动，气氛热闹又温馨。灯笼发光，象征智慧被点亮；大家聚在一起猜谜，其实也是一种文化的传承。

元宵不只是吃汤圆、看灯笼，更是一个“动脑又团圆”的晚上。 🌕🏮

👁️ This patient underwent cardiac bypass surgery three years ago and has been on warfarin for an irregular heartbeat since then.

Over time, her vision deteriorated severely due to a dense cataract. However, she was understandably anxious about cataract surgery. Her concerns were twofold:

• that continuing warfarin might cause serious bleeding during eye surgery

• and that stopping the medication could increase the risk of stroke or heart attack

What ultimately reassured her was seeing a close friend—also on long-term warfarin—successfully undergo cataract surgery at our centre without stopping the blood thinner.

She decided to proceed.

The surgery took 12 minutes, was uncomplicated, and his vision improved immediately after the operation.

Lesson:
Fear of blood thinners should not prevent patients from undergoing sight-restoring cataract surgery. With modern techniques and proper medical assessment, cataract surgery can be performed safely—often without stopping anticoagulant therapy.

👁️ 这位病人三年前做过心脏搭桥手术，之后因为心律不整，一直长期服用华法林（warfarin）。

随着时间推移，她因为白内障非常严重，视力明显下降。但她对白内障手术一直很担心，主要有两个顾虑：

• 继续吃华法林，怕手术时会造成严重出血
• 停药的话，又担心中风或心脏病发作的风险增加

真正让她放下心的，是看到一位好朋友——同样长期服用华法林——在我们中心没有停药就顺利完成白内障手术，而且恢复得很好。

于是，她决定接受手术。

手术过程只用了12分钟，非常顺利，没有并发症，手术后立刻就看得清楚了。

重点提醒：
不必因为正在服用抗凝血药（血液稀释剂），就错过可以恢复视力的白内障手术。只要经过适当评估，加上现代白内障手术技术，很多情况下无需停药，也能安全完成手术。

眼睛的光明很珍贵，别让不必要的恐惧挡住了重见光明的机会。 👁️

“When you hear hoofbeats, think horses🐴, not zebra 🦓.”
A deliciously sensible medical aphorism coined by Dr. Theodore Woodward in the 1940s from the University of Maryland School of Medicine — and still flirting with relevance today.

The idea?
When symptoms trot in, don’t immediately gallop after something exotic.
Start with the obvious. The dependable. The horse. 🐴

👁️ So what are the “horses” in the eye clinic?

• Red eye → Good old conjunctivitis; dry eyes.
• Poor vision → Refractive error, cataract, macular degeneration

🦓 And the zebras?

• Red eye → Rare inflammatory syndromes
• Poor vision → Optic neuritis, brain tumours

Exciting? Yes.
Common? Not quite.
Worth knowing? Absolutely — but only after you’ve ruled out the horses.

A seasoned ophthalmologist knows zebras exist…
but listens carefully before shouting “Eureka!” 🧐

“听到马蹄声，先想是马🐴，不要一开始就当成斑马🦓。”

这是医学界一个很有名的说法，源自 1940 年代的医生 Dr Theodore Woodward。几十年过去了，这句话到今天还是非常实用。

它的意思很简单：
病人出现症状时，不要一开始就往罕见、复杂的病去想。
先从最常见、最合理的原因开始。

也就是说——
先找“马”，不要急着找“斑马”。

👁️ 在眼科里，什么是“马”？

• 眼睛红 → 多数是结膜炎；乾眼症
• 视力变差 → 老花、近视、白内障、黄斑退化

🦓 那“斑马”呢？

• 眼睛红 → 少见的眼内发炎疾病
• 视力差 → 视神经炎、脑部问题

这些病有没有？
有。
重要吗？
当然重要。

但它们并不常见。
有经验的眼科医生，会记得斑马的存在，
但不会一听到马蹄声，就冲去找野生动物园。

🧠 为什么这个道理，放在生活里也一样通？

这个原则，不只是给医生用的。

• 经济压力大 → 先看看自己的开销，而不是怪整个世界
• 感情出问题 → 先沟通，而不是马上给对方贴标签

我们人很容易被“戏剧性解释”吸引，
但大多数问题，其实都是熟悉的老问题，只是被忽略了。

一个好的眼科医生，
也是一个有智慧的人：

• 先找马
• 真的看到斑马，才当斑马
• 不要太快迷恋稀奇古怪的解释

郎世寧（1688–1766）為義大利耶穌會修士，入清後長期供職宮廷，善融中西畫法，題材涵蓋人物、花鳥與走獸，深受皇室賞識，並教授油畫技法。

本圖描繪蒙古準噶爾人阿玉錫，後投效清廷。乾隆二十年（1755），阿玉錫率二十餘騎夜襲叛軍，大捷而歸，乾隆特命郎世寧為其寫真。

畫中阿玉錫戴孔雀翎暖帽、著箭衣，背火槍、繫箭囊，左手控韁、右手握長矛，策馬疾馳；神情果敢英發。畫家捨去背景，以寫實手法突出人物與奔馬的動勢與神采。
