I have sat with many children whose worlds are rich, vivid, and deeply meaningfulโyet so often misunderstood.
I have seen the quiet child who watches from the corner, not because they do not want to belong, but because the world moves too fast, speaks too loudly, expects too much, too soon. I have met adolescents who long for friendship but struggle to find the rhythm of connection that others take for granted. I have spoken to adults who carry years of being misunderstoodโlabelled as difficult, distant, or differentโwhen in truth, they were simply navigating a world that was not built with them in mind.
As a child and adolescent psychiatrist, I do not see deficits first. I see difference. I see effort. I see courage.
But I have also seen what happens when understanding is absent.
Opportunities missed.
Potential overlooked.
Voices unheard.
Lives quietly pushed to the margins.
And that is something we can change.
Autism is not a problem to be fixedโit is a perspective to be understood. When we shift from judgment to curiosity, from correction to connection, everything begins to transform. A child who was โdifficultโ becomes a child who is overwhelmed. An adolescent who is โwithdrawnโ becomes someone who is trying, in their own way, to cope. An adult who is โrigidโ becomes someone who finds safety in predictability.
Understanding gives meaning.
Support gives strength.
Acceptance gives dignity.
These are not luxuriesโthey are necessities.
Every child and every individual on the autism spectrum deserves more than just awareness. They deserve a community that stands with them. A school that adapts for them. A workplace that values them. A society that includes themโnot as an afterthought, but as part of โus.โ
Because they are part of us.
Today, I carry a quiet but firm conviction from all the children and families I have met:
We must do betterโnot by changing them, but by changing how we see them.
Let us be the teacher who pauses and understands.
The parent who listens without judgment.
The friend who includes without hesitation.
The colleague who accepts without conditions.
Let us be the pillar they can lean onโso that they can stand, grow, and shine in their own way.
Not apart from us.
Not behind us.
But with us, and among us.
No one left behind.
