Today, we were pleased to host spine neurosurgeon Dr. Lee from Penang, who joined us for a clinical exchange focused on cervical artificial disc replacement surgery.

Throughout the procedure, we explored the application of the latest-generation Synergy cervical disc, diving into its indications, techniques, and clinical insights through hands-on demonstration and professional dialogue.

🧠❗️MISDIAGNOSED AS STROKE — PARALYZED BEFORE SURGERY❗️🧠

A 52-year-old man came in with weakness in his right leg and back pain. Doctors thought it was a minor stroke and treated him with blood thinners.

But it wasn’t a stroke.
It was severe spinal cord compression at his neck (C6/7/T1), a condition called cervical myelopathy. By the time the right diagnosis was made, it was too late. He had already become paralyzed from the waist down, lost sensation, and control of his bladder.

🚨 This is a reminder:
➡️ Sudden weakness is not always stroke
➡️ Back/neck pain with weakness = consider spinal cause
➡️ Time is spine. Early diagnosis can save lives.

Please don’t wait. Recognize the signs. Act early. Save function. Save lives.

Seorang lelaki berumur 52 tahun datang dengan lemah pada kaki kanan dan sakit belakang. Doktor menyangka ia strok ringan dan memberikan ubat cair darah.

Namun sebenarnya, bukan strok.
Ia adalah tekanan serius pada saraf tunjang di leher (C6/7/T1), dikenali sebagai mielopati serviks. Bila diagnosis sebenar dibuat, sudah terlambat. Beliau telah lumpuh dari pinggang ke bawah, hilang rasa, dan tidak dapat kawal pembuangan air.

🚨 Ini peringatan penting:
➡️ Lemah tiba-tiba bukan semestinya strok
➡️ Sakit belakang/leher dengan lemah = mungkin masalah saraf tunjang
➡️ Masa adalah saraf. Diagnosis awal boleh selamatkan nyawa dan fungsi.

🦴💥 She Thought It Was Just Back Pain… Until It Was Too Late💥🦴
[A Real Story About Osteoporosis You Need to Hear]

In December 2024, Madam L., a 55-year-old postmenopausal woman, felt a sudden sharp pain in her upper back while bending down to lift a light box.
No fall. No accident.
Just… pain.

She thought it was just a muscle strain. She rested, took painkillers, and pushed through the discomfort.
After all, life doesn’t stop, right?

But over the next few weeks, the pain didn’t go away.
In fact, it got worse.

⏳ Fast forward to March 2025:
Madam L walks into our clinic, her posture noticeably hunched, her steps cautious. She looks like she’s carrying the weight of the world on her back — and in some ways, she is.

Her pain has become *unbearable*. She struggles to sleep, can’t stand for long, and feels exhausted all the time.

🔍 CT scan reveals the truth:
👉 A T8 compression fracture that has progressed significantly.
👉 The vertebra has collapsed further, pulling her spine into a kyphotic curve (hunchback posture).
👉 The damage is now unstable — she needs posterior fixation with screws to realign and support her spine.

💔 But here’s the heartbreaking part…
This could have been avoided.
If the fracture was treated early with Percutaneous Vertebroplasty (PVP) — a simple, minimally invasive procedure —
✅ The bone could have been stabilized
✅ The pain controlled within days
✅ Her spine protected from further collapse
✅ Surgery never needed

They don’t always come from big injuries — sometimes, it’s just lifting something small, a cough, or a sneeze.

Transforming Lives, One Spine at a Time

I’m honored to share a significant milestone in my journey as a spine and brain surgeon—with over 1,000 successful cervical disc arthroplasty cases performed right here in Malaysia.

My focus has always been on advancing motion-preserving spinal surgery, and the Mobi-C implant has been a game-changer in helping patients regain mobility, reduce pain, and return to the lives they love.

Since 2011, I’ve been privileged to play a key role in developing the Neurosurgery and Spine Surgery services at Regency Specialist Hospital, a journey now in its 15th year.

Today, I continue this mission through the Dr. Teo Spine and Brain Clinic, located within Regency Specialist Hospital in Johor Bahru—bringing together advanced surgical care and personalized treatment for every patient who walks through our doors.

It’s also been a privilege to contribute as a faculty member of Highridge, where I mentor and train the next generation of spine surgeons.

Thank you to every patient, colleague, and partner who has supported this path. The journey continues—with innovation, compassion, and commitment at the core.
