Did you know that a significant number of older adults experience mental health challenges, but many go unnoticed? 🕊️ As family and community members, we often focus on their physical needs while forgetting that their emotional wellbeing is just as important. Loneliness, depression, and anxiety can quietly impact their daily lives, yet they may hesitate to speak up.

A little more attention, empathy, and patience can go a long way. Let’s all make it a point to check in, listen deeply, and support our elderly loved ones, because mental health care has no age limit. 💙

Change is hard, especially when old habits have been your way of coping. Those urges you feel? They’re like waves: they can feel huge, but they naturally rise and fall. Urge surfing is about learning to notice the wave without getting swept away. You don’t have to fight it or try to make it disappear. You just observe it, ride it out, and let it pass.
改变很挑战,尤其当旧习惯已经成为你的应对方式。那些冲动和渴望,就像浪潮一样:看起来很大,但它们会自然升起,也会慢慢退去。Urge Surfing,就是学会觉察浪潮,而不被卷走。你不需要跟冲动作战,也不需要让它消失,只要观察它、乘着它,让它过去。

Every wave you ride is a small victory. Your brain learns that discomfort is temporary, that you can handle it, and that healthier choices are possible. When we’re triggered, our brains want to act now. That snap reaction is totally human, it’s how we’ve learned to protect ourselves.

Responding doesn’t mean you have it all figured out or that you're being perfectly calm. It just means you're giving yourself a moment to pause; to check in, breathe, and choose what feels right for you. The pause gives yours space to notice, choose, and do what feels more helpful in that moment.

🌀 Responding = creating space between the trigger and what you do next. And sometimes, that little space makes all the difference.

One of the biggest misunderstandings about mental health is that everyone can be divided into two separate categories - mentally healthy and mentally unwell. This false belief is dangerous as it increases stigma towards people with mental health conditions.
An accurate way to think of mental health is as a spectrum of experience, ranging from mentally healthy at one end, and mentally unwell at the other end. In between them is a spectrum of experiences ranging on the negative side from severe symptoms, to milder symptoms, then to positive experiences on the other end.
