Mechanical/postural low back pain refers to any type of back pain caused by placing abnormal stress and strain on muscles and soft tissues of the vertebral column.

Causes of mechanical low back pain:
1.Poor posture
2.Poor-designed seating
3.Incorrect bending
4.Lifting motions
5.Specific trauma
6.Strenuous activity

What is the symptoms?
1.Pain that worsens with activity, which pain may develop after certain activities
2.Difficulty bending or twisting your back
3.Pain that extends into the buttocks or outer hip
4.May experience muscle spasms
5.Pain when flexion of the back and lifting heavy objects
6.Prolonged standing/sitting caused low back pain

What is the treatment?
1.Ice or Heat
Applying heat and ice alternately to the lower back is helpful to relax the muscle and decrease muscle inflammation. Generally, heat or ice should be applied two to three times per day.

2.Bed Rest
Short term bed rest for severe back pain and muscle spasms within three to four days.

3.Home Exercise Programs
Physical Therapist recommend early physical activity to promote rapid recovery from back pain. An exercise programs require home exercises as frequently as every two hours while your are awake.

4.Physical Therapy
Physical Therapist work on correcting muscle stiffness and weakness, which active physical therapy help shorten recovery time and return you to work and leisure activities as quickly as possible. Physical Therapist can also advice on good posture, proper lifting technique and correct computer workstation set-up.

Poor posture occurred when the spine is positioned in unnatural positions, which the curves are emphasized and this resulted the joints, muscles and vertebrae being in stressful positions.

Symptoms of poor posture:
1.Rounded shoulders
2.Potbelly
3.Bent knees when standing or walking
4.Head that either leans forward or backward
5.Back pain
6.Body aches and pains
7.Muscle fatigue
8.Headache

Contributing factors:
1.Sedentary lifestyle
2.Occupational demands
3.Joint stiffness
4.Decreased fitness
5.Muscle weakness
6.Muscle tightness
7.Poor core stability
8.Poor ergonomic workstations

What is the treatment?
1)Postural education and training.
2)Manual therapy and soft tissue massage.
3)Dry needling
4)Postural taping
5)Electrotherapy
6)Joint mobilization
7)Postural correction exercises to improve flexibility, strength and posture.
8)Postural pilates exercises to strengthen the muscles that support a good posture.

When the arch of the foot collapses excessively downward or inward, this is known as overpronation or commonly known as the flat foot.

Common pain symptoms:
1. Plantar Fasciitis
2. Shin Splints
3. Back Pain
4. Heel Pain
5. Achilles Tendonitis
6. Knee Pain

What is the treatment?
1) Choosing Supportive Shoes
Look for the shoes that offer extra support and stability to help minimize the impact of your gait to lessen the pronation.

2) Stretching Exercises
These exercise help relieve pain or discomfort, also retrain your gait by raising and strengthening your arches to correct the alignment of the ankles and knees.

3) Wearing Orthotics
Orthotics are special inserts that slip into shoes to help support the feet and promote proper foot positioning.

Sitting for prolonged period of time can be major cause of back pain, caused increased stress of the back, neck, arms and legs

Effect for your back when sitting for too long:
1) Strained neck
when most of your sitting occurs at a desk when doing works, craning neck forward toward the keyboard or tilting head when holding your phone can strain the cervical vertebrae and cause permanent imbalances.

2) Sore shoulders and back
Forward head overextends the shoulder and back muscles, particularly the trapezius which connects the neck and shoulder

3) Inflexible spine
The soft discs between vertebrae expand and contract like sponges when we move around. This help soaking up fresh blood and nutrients. When we sit for long time, the discs are squashed unevenly and lose sponginess.

What can we do?
1) Sitting on something wobbly such an exercise ball or backless stool to force the core muscles to work. Make sure to sit up straight and keep your feet flat on the floor.
2) Stretching the hip flexor such as lunges exercise for 3 minutes each side once a day.
3) Alternating between sitting and standing. Stand up for every 20 minutes of sitting.
4) Trying yoga poses (cow and cat poses) to improve extension and flexion of the back
