Mechanical/postural low back pain refers to any type of back pain caused by placing abnormal stress and strain on muscles and soft tissues of the vertebral column.
Causes of mechanical low back pain:
1.Poor posture
2.Poor-designed seating
3.Incorrect bending
4.Lifting motions
5.Specific trauma
6.Strenuous activity
What is the symptoms?
1.Pain that worsens with activity, which pain may develop after certain activities
2.Difficulty bending or twisting your back
3.Pain that extends into the buttocks or outer hip
4.May experience muscle spasms
5.Pain when flexion of the back and lifting heavy objects
6.Prolonged standing/sitting caused low back pain
What is the treatment?
1.Ice or Heat
Applying heat and ice alternately to the lower back is helpful to relax the muscle and decrease muscle inflammation. Generally, heat or ice should be applied two to three times per day.
2.Bed Rest
Short term bed rest for severe back pain and muscle spasms within three to four days.
3.Home Exercise Programs
Physical Therapist recommend early physical activity to promote rapid recovery from back pain. An exercise programs require home exercises as frequently as every two hours while your are awake.
4.Physical Therapy
Physical Therapist work on correcting muscle stiffness and weakness, which active physical therapy help shorten recovery time and return you to work and leisure activities as quickly as possible. Physical Therapist can also advice on good posture, proper lifting technique and correct computer workstation set-up.
