This Obesity Care Week (coincides with World Obesity Day today), we reaffirm our Commit to Care: listening without judgment, using evidence-based treatment, and partnering with patients on their journey to better health.
For patients like “lShanon”, comprehensive care from our team helped transform health, confidence, and quality of life.
Because obesity care is not just about weight, it’s about restoring health and reclaiming life.

To anyone struggling with weight: you are not doing anything wrong, and you do not need to be “punished” to lose weight. Obesity is not a crime.
Programmes like this one in Beijing may lead to short-term weight loss through intensive exercise and strict dieting, but they do not treat obesity. When biology, mental health, daily environment, and long-term support are ignored, weight often returns after the programme ends.
A “penjara” approach only creates shame, fear, and stigma, not health. Obesity is a chronic disease, not a discipline problem.
People living with obesity deserve evidence-based, sustainable, and dignified care. Let's support, not punish. 🤗

Seeing your doctor for a weight management discussion? Here’s how to prepare 👇
1️⃣ Your goals.
Be clear about what you want:
Improve health conditions (diabetes, blood pressure, fatty liver, joint pain).
Improve energy, mobility, sleep, or quality of life.
Weight loss target (if any)- for open discussion, not a fixed target.
2️⃣ Your weight journey so far.
Share honestly:
Previous diets or programs tried.
Medications or supplements used.
What worked, what didn’t, and why you stopped.
3️⃣ Medical history & medications.
Existing medical conditions.
Current medications (including traditional or over-the-counter products). Some treatments affect weight more than we realise.
4️⃣ Lifestyle routine (no judgment here).
Your doctor needs the real picture:
Typical meals and eating patterns.
Physical activity level.
Work schedule, stress, sleep, family commitments.
This helps tailor a plan that fits your life, not an unrealistic one.
5️⃣ Barriers & concerns.
Be open about:
Side-effect worries.
Cost or access issues.
Fear of weight recurrence.
Previous negative healthcare experiences.
6️⃣ Questions you want answered.
For example:
“What options are suitable for me?”.
“I want to know about treatment A in the market."
📌 Remember:
Weight management is a long-term journey. Your doctor is your partner, not your judge.

First clinic of 2026. Coffee in hand ☕. Hard to believe it’s been just over 3 years with SMCP since day one.
Still learning, still growing, still thankful for this journey.

Imagine: inside a room (conference, lecture room, office etc), there are 10 Malaysian adults. *7 of them have excess body weight, some of them have overweight, and some obesity. That's how serious the prevalence of obesity is in the country.
I can see many people from various sectors putting their hands together to help. Maybe we have differences in strategies and principles, but all are for the same goal, tackling the disease of obesity.
From the medical perspective, I want you to know, obesity is a disease, and there is nothing wrong with seeking professional help. Just like you would if you have DM HPT Asthma etc.
Let's do this together.

Obesity Medicine 🤝 Bariatric Surgery 🤝 Dietitians
This week has been full of meaningful multidisciplinary collaboration with my Sunway Bariatric Team.
I had the opportunity to share with our dietitians about the available obesity medications in Malaysia, their dosing, side effects, and troubleshooting strategies. In return, they shared valuable insights from their post-bariatric patient cases and the unique challenges they encounter in follow-up care.
The week continued with an invitation from my surgeon colleague to observe a robotic-assisted bariatric surgery.
Although I serve as a visiting consultant at Sunway, I’m truly grateful to be part of such a dedicated, collaborative, and passionate team working hand-in-hand for the best outcomes of our patients. 💪
