🚽 Give Me 5 Series: Toilet Training

Part 3 – How to Make Toilet Training a Success
Once your child is ready, these strategies can help make the experience smoother and more positive:
1️⃣ Choose the right time – avoid stressful periods like moving house or new siblings
2️⃣ Build a daily routine – encourage potty time after waking, meals, or when you notice signs
3️⃣ Encourage and motivate – use praise, rewards, and positivity to keep spirits high
4️⃣ Dress for success – training pants or easy-to-remove clothes prevent unnecessary accidents
5️⃣ Teach clean habits – proper wiping and handwashing from the start

🌟 With patience and encouragement, toilet training becomes a confident step toward independence — and a proud milestone for both child and parent!

🚽 Give Me 5 Series: Toilet Training

Part 2 – Preparing for Toilet Training
Preparation lays the foundation for a smooth toilet training journey. Helping your toddler become familiar with the process before starting makes all the difference:
1️⃣ Use simple toilet words like “wee” or “poo” so your child understands
2️⃣ Show potty purpose by putting dirty nappies into the potty
3️⃣ Let children watch and learn from parents or older siblings
4️⃣ Try training pants for short periods each day to build the habit
5️⃣ Keep bowels comfortable with enough fibre and water daily

🌟 Gentle preparation builds familiarity and confidence, making toilet training less daunting when it begins.

🚽 Give Me 5 Series: Toilet Training

Part 1 – Signs Your Toddler May Be Ready
Toilet training is much smoother when you wait until your child is ready. Starting too early can cause stress, accidents, or resistance. Look out for these important signs of readiness:
1️⃣ Walking & sitting – can walk steadily and sit on a potty without help
2️⃣ Growing independence – enjoys doing things alone, often says “no”
3️⃣ Regular poos – soft, formed stools on a predictable schedule
4️⃣ Knowing what’s happening – able to tell you when they wee or poo, dislikes wet nappies
5️⃣ Helping themselves – can pull pants up and down, and follow simple instructions

🌟 Every child develops at their own pace — recognising these cues helps make toilet training less stressful for both parent and child.

Combating constipation in toddlers can be a real challenge. Some children may even end up in the Emergency Department with severe tummy pain, while others need repeated visits to the doctor for ongoing constipation. Sounds familiar? Many parents hear their child complain of abdominal pain every 2–3 days, only to discover constipation is the hidden cause.

✨ In today’s Give Me 5 series, I’ll share simple tips to help your child:
1️⃣ Add more fiber – fruits, grains, veggies
2️⃣ Drink more fluids – water, prune or apple juice
3️⃣ Try the toilet after meals – use natural timing
4️⃣ Use a footstool – knees higher than hips
5️⃣ Watch for holding signs – tiptoes, hiding, refusing

🌱 Small daily changes can make a big difference in your child’s comfort!

🎉 Give Me 5: Less Screen, More Green! 🌿
5 fun tips to reduce screen time and bring back real play!

Screens can be helpful, but too much of a good thing isn't great — especially for little minds. These 5 tips help you find that sweet spot between tech and togetherness. 💡💬

1️⃣ Be the role model
Kids copy us — so put down the phone and show them how it’s done.

2️⃣ Swap screens for fun
Dancing, puzzles, storytelling… screen-free can still be exciting!

3️⃣ Cut down slowly
For kids aged 2–5, aim for under 1 hour/day — and reduce gradually.

4️⃣ Screen-free zones
No screens during meals, in bedrooms, or before bed = better focus and sleep.

5️⃣ Narrate your own screen use
“I’m checking the weather,” or “Just replying to work” helps kids understand it's not all games and videos.
