Here's something many parents don't know: the visual system is "plastic," meaning it's most responsive to treatment before age 8.
This is called the "critical period" of visual development. After this window closes, certain vision problems become significantly harder to correct.
Conditions like lazy eye (amblyopia) and misaligned eyes (strabismus) are far more treatable when caught early, but they rarely cause pain or obvious discomfort, so children rarely complain.
What to look out for at each stage:
πΆ 0β3 months: Does baby briefly make eye contact and follow your face?
π§ 1β3 years: Are they bumping into things or holding objects very close?
π 3β5 years: Do they avoid near tasks like drawing or puzzles?
π« 6β10 years: Are they getting headaches, losing their place reading, or struggling in class?
If 2 or more signs appear repeatedly over time, that's your cue to book a check, not wait. Early detection changes outcomes.
