Multiple parotid stones. We used to remove the parotid gland for such cases in the past. Nowadays, we perform combined sialendoscopy with external approach to remove these stones, saving the parotid gland and greatly reducing the extent of surgery needed for such cases.

A check sialendoscopy is performed following stone removal to ascertain the complete removal of calculi, residual debris, mucus plugs, and to evaluate for any areas of stenosis. Mucus plugs will be flushed out with saline irrigation via sialendoscope instrumentation port. In this video, a 1.6mm diameter sialendoscope was used.

How many of you experience a nose block but you can’t pinpoint why? 🤧

2 common conditions that cause a nose block are sinusitis and allergic rhinitis. A common misconception is that sinusitis and allergic rhinitis are the same condition. While they both involve inflammation of the nasal passages, they have different causes and symptoms.

Sinusitis is typically caused by infections (viral, bacterial, or fungal) or structural issues in the sinuses, leading to symptoms like facial pain, pressure, and thick nasal discharge.

Allergic rhinitis, on the other hand, is caused by allergens (like pollen, dust mites, or pet dander) and primarily leads to symptoms such as sneezing, itchy eyes, and a runny nose without the facial pain associated with sinusitis.

Whether it’s sinusitis or allergic rhinitis, knowing the cause is the first step to relief! Understand your triggers and let’s discuss your symptoms and find the right solution together!

The term "sinus" originates from Latin, meaning "cavity" or "passage." In everyday language, it typically refers to the paranasal sinuses—air-filled cavities within our skull that are connected to the nasal passages.

There are four pairs of these sinuses:
- Maxillary
- Ethmoid
- Sphenoid
- Frontal

The primary functions of the sinus cavities include:
- Enhancing voice resonance
- Filtering and humidifying the air inhaled through the nose
- Removing unwanted particles from the sinus passages

When one or more of these sinuses becomes inflamed, it results in a condition known as sinusitis or sinus allergy. This inflammation increases internal pressure within the sinuses, often causing discomfort or pain in the cheeks, eyes, nose, or one side of the head (including the temples), and can lead to severe headaches.

If not properly addressed, sinus infections can potentially spread and affect the chest and lungs.

Thyroid nodules are growths that occur in the thyroid gland forming a lump or bump within the smooth thyroid tissue. Thyroid nodules are common, occurring in approximately 40% of women and 30% of men during their lifetime. When people hear they have a thyroid nodule, they worry about cancer and the need for nodule removal.

Thyroid nodule removal, involving surgical resection of half or the whole thyroid, is often necessary to diagnose and cure these nodules, particularly when they are cancerous.

If you’re unsure and would like to seek for more information, feel free to contact Dr Loh & our team for a personalized consultation.

Most thyroid nodules don't cause signs or symptoms. But occasionally some nodules become so large that they can:
• Be felt
• Be seen, often as a swelling at the base of your neck
• Press on your windpipe or esophagus, causing shortness of breath or difficulty swallowing

Thyroid nodules can be a warning sign for thyroid cancer! Most cancerous thyroid nodules are slow growing and may be small when your doctor discovers them.

If you suspect that you might have a thyroid nodule, it’s always advisable to get it checked the soonest possible by a specialist.

Thyroid nodules are solid or fluid-filled lumps that form within your thyroid, a small gland located at the base of your neck.

Most thyroid nodules aren't serious and don't cause symptoms. Only a small percentage of thyroid nodules are cancerous.

You often won't know you have a thyroid nodule until your doctor discovers it during a routine medical exam. Or your doctor may uncover it during a scan that was done for another health reason. Some thyroid nodules, however, may become large enough to be visible or make it difficult to swallow or breathe.

If you noticed growth of the nodule overtime, you can get checked with ultrasound to evaluate your condition. If found low risk, your doctor will continue to monitor it over a period of time. However, if found high risk after ultrasound check, a biopsy may be recommended.
