TB: The Silent Threat That Never Left

Tuberculosis (TB) isn't just an "old disease" from history books—it is still here, and it’s spreading in our community every single day.

It’s airborne. You don’t catch it from a surface; you catch it by sharing the same air as someone with active TB for a long period of time.

Most of the time, your body’s immune system "walls off" the bacteria, making it Latent TB. You feel fine and aren't infectious, but the bacteria are still inside you. Later in life—especially if your immunity weakens due to age or conditions like Diabetes Mellitus—those sleeping bacteria can "wake up" and turn into active, infectious TB.

Know the Warning Signs:
🛑 A cough that won’t go away (more than 2 weeks)
🛑 Dropping weight without trying
🛑 Constant fatigue
🛑 Drenching night sweats

Let’s talk numbers in Sarawak 📍
The WHO estimates Malaysia's TB rate at 96 new cases for every 100,000 people each year. To put that into perspective:
- Sarawak (2.5 million people) = Estimated 2,400 new cases every year.
- Kuching (600,000 people) = Estimated 576 new cases every year.

The Biggest Myth: "Only foreigners get TB."
The Truth: TB does not discriminate. Whether you are a local or a foreigner, young or old, everyone has a fair chance of being infected.

Unlike COVID-19, TB isn't a "new" surprise, but it is a constant one. Let's stay vigilant, recognize the symptoms early, and look out for one another.

Please help Baby Elizabeth who needs a LIFE SAVING BONE MARROW TRANSPLANT for SCID ( Severe Combined Immunodeficiency)

🚨 SAVE BABY ELIZABETH BELLA NOW 🚨 RM30,000 Needed Urgently for Life-Saving Bone Marrow Transplant by March 2026

A rare disease should not be a death sentence. Together, we can give Elizabeth Bella a chance to live.

Baby Elizabeth Bella, less than 1 year old, has been diagnosed with a rare and life-threatening condition called Severe Combined Immunodeficiency (SCID) — often known as “bubble baby disease”. Without urgent treatment, her body is unable to fight infections, and her life is at serious risk.

Immunology Team from UPM & doctors from University Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC) have confirmed that Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) is her only chance to survive.

💉 Total treatment, medication and other expenses cost: RM60,000-RM75,000
⏳ Urgently needed: RM30,000 by early March 2026 (during hospital admission)

Elizabeth’s father works as a labourer with very limited income, while her mother has stopped working to care for her full time. Despite their efforts, the family is unable to raise the required fund alone.

MYPOPI has assessed the case with urgency and compassion. However, our patient welfare fund (Tabung Kebajikan Pesakit) is not sufficient to cover this life-saving treatment. We are therefore appealing to the kindness and generosity of the public.

🙏 Every contribution — big or small — can help save Elizabeth Bella’s life.
🙏 Your donation is a gift of hope, health, and a future.
📌 Medical reports from Hospital Sibu and UMMC are available upon request.
📣 Please donate and share this message widely.
Together, we can give Elizabeth Bella a fighting chance to grow up, smile, and live.

About 1 out of 10,000 people have an anaphylactic reaction every year in response to contact with a foreign substance, or antigen to which an individual is sensitive. While a particularly severe form of anaphylaxis can be fatal, it can normally be controlled if treated immediately. This is in part thanks to the discovery of medicine laureate Charles Richet, whose work on anaphylaxis just over 100 years ago left a lasting impact on the understanding of allergies.

Our immune system protects us from attacks by microorganisms and poisonous substances. After experiencing an attack, the immune system learns to defend itself against new attacks – we become immune. One of the ways this is used is with vaccinations, when a low dosage of an infectious substance provides immunity. Through studies involving dogs, Charles Richet demonstrated an opposite effect in 1902. After an initial low dose of a substance, a new dose some weeks later could produce a severe reaction. He called the phenomenon anaphylaxis.

Having made the breakthrough, which earned him the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 1913, he helped elucidate problems of hay fever, asthma, and other allergic reactions to foreign substances, preventing potentially millions of deaths from allergic reactions.
