Cancer & Mental Health: Closing the Care Gap!

Did you know that mental health plays a HUGE role in how cancer patients cope with diagnosis and treatment?

Many go through the 5 emotional stages:
1. Denial - “This can’t be happening.”
2.Anger - “Why me?”
3.Bargaining - “If I do this, maybe I’ll get better.”
4.Depression - Sadness & hopelessness set in.
5.Acceptance - Coming to terms with reality, finding peace.

But here’s the good news: with the right family support, strong patient–doctor relationships, and mental health care, patients can feel less alone and more empowered to fight.

Let’s break the silence around cancer and mental health.

💭 “How would YOU support a loved one going through this journey?”

Did you know that a highly competitive school environment can put teenagers at risk of depression? 😲

Our Prof. Dato’ Dr. Andrew Mohanraj was recently featured sharing his insights on this pressing issue. He stressed the importance of equipping all teachers with psychological first aid, as they are often the first to notice when a student is in distress and can provide early support.

He also stated that, schools should be more than just places for academic achievement, they must be safe spaces where students feel heard, supported and understood. Early intervention and collaboration between teachers, parents and communities are key in safeguarding mental health! 🤗

We encourage you to take the time to read the article and reflect on his message. Academic success is important, but it should never come at the expense of emotional well-being! 💚

We’re proud to share that our President, Dato’ Dr. Andrew Mohanraj, was recently featured in The Star's cover story, "Need for More Psychologists."

In the article, he sheds light on the growing mental health challenges in Malaysia and the urgent shortage of clinical psychologists in the country. Dato’ Andrew describes the situation as “dismal,” especially with rising cases of anxiety, stress, and other issues made worse by the pandemic and social media.

He also highlights how difficult it is for young professionals to enter the field from high training costs to a lack of job opportunities and calls for systemic reforms to make mental health care more accessible for everyone.

We invite you to read the full article to better understand the changes that are needed and why strengthening mental health services in Malaysia is so important.
