然而,这个论断虽然尖锐,但在逻辑上过于简化。让我们具体谈谈提到的两个盲点。

1. 抹去代际牺牲(“长辈”的论证)

他的论述把人生当作孤立的个体交易。但我们现在享有的生活质量; 哪怕只是读这段话的当下; 是由那些从未得到那“5-10年自由”的人建造的。

每周40小时工作制、双休日、病假、童工法: 这些不是天上掉下来的礼物。

它们是前人用60多个小时在危险条件下工作50年换来的,许多人退休后不久(如果能活到退休的话)就死去了。

他们的“骗局”比我们的糟糕得多。

他们的牺牲让我们能拥有任何一点闲暇时间。

公共卫生、疫苗、抗生素: 我们的祖父母那辈人曾活在脊髓灰质炎、结核病、50岁就被感染夺去生命的时代。

他们的“工作”包括修建下水道和医院。

我们现在甚至能担忧自己会在病床上度过漫长的晚年(而不是60岁死于可预防的感染),这直接源于他们无偿或低酬的牺牲。

教育是馈赠,不是成本: 那20年读历史、科学、文学的时光,是由纳税、建校、重视识字率的长辈们资助的。

他们不把教育看作“工作前浪费的时间”

他们视之为自己曾被剥夺的、来之不易的特权。

这个论断隐含的意思是:“我没要求过这个系统,所以我谁也不欠。”但我们确实继承了它。

Wi-Fi、药物、法治、舒適的居住環境 - 没有一样是凭空出现的。无视这笔债务并不会让我们的论点更真实;只会让它非历史。

2. 缺失的替代方案(更好的路是什么?)

一个有效的批判必须回答:跟什么比? 这个论断暗示这是一场骗局,但骗局都有一个承诺了却从未兑现的替代方案。他提出的替代方案是什么?

让我们测试几种逻辑上的可能:

彻底拒绝工作?
那谁来种你我的粮食、你我发的电、造你我的手机?難道我们不过是白吃白喝别人40年的劳动成果 ; 那是远更不道德的立场。

回到前工业时代?
狩猎采集者不用“工作”40年,但他们也没有牙医、没有抗生素,预期寿命约35岁。婴儿死亡率40%。你我的“自由”将是短暂而野蛮的。

乌托邦式的自动化?
这是个好目标,但我们还没到那一步。

而要实现它,需要……几代人的学习和工作,而这些人自己并不会完全享受到成果。

最连贯的替代方案不是彻底拒绝这套蓝图,而是改革它:更短的工作周、全民医保(让“卧病在床”不至于成为财务灾难)、休假年、有意义的工作、提前部分退休。这些是对现行系统的改进,而不是对代际契约的否定。

这个论断更深层的缺陷

他的等式 ; 20年读书 + 40年打工 = 5年自由 ; 隐藏了两个错误假设,在人类历史的大部分时期它们根本不成立:

1. “自由”只在工作停止后才存在。 这是伪装成清醒的虚无主义。

意义、快乐、友谊、爱情、创造力和目标,恰恰发生在那40年的工作和20年的读书之中。

如果直到退休你我的人生都没有任何意义,问题不在于系统; 而在于我们的人生态度和思维。

2. 我们的长辈们是傻瓜。 他们知道这笔账。但他们仍然觉得值得,因为他们是在为我们建造,而不仅仅是为自己。这个论断把他们的选择斥为妄想。这不是批判;这是忘恩负义。

结论

这个论断之所以错误,不是因为它的愤世嫉俗。而是因为它懒惰。它无视历史进步,没有提出任何可行的替代方案,并且把个人意义的缺失与系统性骗局混为一谈。

真正的骗局不是那20/40/5-10的蓝图。真正的骗局是试图让年轻人相信:长辈的牺牲毫无意义,他们自己的工龄岁月不可能蕴含快乐,唯一值得拥有的是全部贡献结束之后的绝对自由。

那不是真相。那是一套自我实现的痛苦预言。

And it broke her heart.

Makcik Rosnah has been selling nasi lemak for over 10 years.

Same stall. Same early mornings. Same customers.

But recently, everything changed.

The price of chicken went up.
Cooking oil went up.
Even basic ingredients became unpredictable.

Not because of anything in her control.

But because of conflicts happening thousands of kilometers away.

At the same time, in another country, a motorcycle driver is working two extra hours a day…

Just to earn what he used to.

This is the reality of the world we are living in today.

A deep, global shift where:
• Wars affect food prices
• Politics affects your daily expenses
• Decisions made far away reshape your life

Whether we follow the news or not…
we are all part of it.

So how do we stay grounded in a world like this?

Not by ignoring it.
Not by obsessing over it.

But by learning how to respond differently.

🧘‍♀️ A Simple Way to Cope

When things feel overwhelming:
• Pause and take a breath
• Focus on what is actually in front of you
• Ask: “What can I control right now?”

Because while the world may feel chaotic…

Your response doesn’t have to be.

🌱 Maybe this is the real opportunity

To slow down.
To rethink what truly matters.
To reconnect—with ourselves, our families, our communities.

In uncertain times, strength is not about having all the answers.

It’s about staying steady… even when things are unclear.

What an inspiring day it was at LaLaport Rooftop Garden! The "Rewirement, Not Retirement" Conference concluded on a high note, filled with meaningful conversations, heartfelt sharing, and powerful insights—all dedicated to supporting mental well-being in our golden years.

Our golden age audience especially benefited from the highly interactive sessions, where stigma was dismantled mindfully, resilience was reignited, and purpose was rediscovered. From Our practitioner, Teik Yen Ko enlightening talk on breaking mental health barriers, to the dynamic panel on overcoming post-retirement isolation, every moment was a step toward living with intention and connection.

Real change starts with me.

When I choose not to pause and reflect on my relentless pursuit of busyness……..

Instead, I drown myself in more work, further disconnecting from my inner self and from my own humanity.

When I choose not to sit with the difficult feelings that make me feel vulnerable………

Instead, I numb myself with digital distractions and stuff down the discomfort with the toxic sweetness of comfort eating.

We have forgotten what it means to be human, having reduced ourselves to little more than money-making machines.

When we can no longer feel our own emotions, how can we possibly feel empathy for others?

When we disconnect from our own hearts—replacing compassion with intellectualization and justification—it becomes easy to rationalize our cold-bloodedness and cruelty as mere necessity.

As adults, what lessons are we imparting to our children about becoming human?

Will they learn to be warm, gentle, respectful, and kind?

Or will they simply learn to intellectualize and rationalize their way through every situation, guided by the mantra of 'shoot them down and kill them all' from the PC games they are hooked on?

I am excited to invite you to a special community event in support of World Mental Health Day 2025. I will be delivering a series of public talks at the "Community: Supporting Mental Wellbeing Together" event, held at Megah Rise Mall, PJ.

The weekend is centred around the powerful theme of “Rewirement, not Retirement,” focusing on proactive mental wellness at all stages of life.
