In the bustling city of Petaling Jaya, a unique and inspiring movement emerged, uniting motorcycle enthusiasts from diverse professional backgrounds. This self-funded initiative, known as Adipati Bertiga, is driven by a shared passion for riding and a commitment to making it an integral part of their daily lifestyle and culture.

Without the advantage of widespread awareness, Adipati Bertiga embarked on their journey with a series of signature programs and campaigns. They forged smart partnerships and collaborations with domestic and international stakeholders, determined to spread their love for motorcycles and build a strong community.

By 2024, Adipati Bertiga made their boldest move yet: establishing their own clubhouse-café. This new haven for motorcycle fans and enthusiasts took 257 days to renovate and refurbish. The team, leveraging their skills in interior architecture and craftsmanship, meticulously wired and welded the space together, creating a welcoming environment where kindred spirits could gather and share their passion.

At PJKita, we believe in the power of such community spirit. Adipati Bertiga’s movement aligns perfectly with the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, and Goal 17: Partnerships for the Goals. This platform, with a little more support and encouragement, has the potential to become one of Petaling Jaya’s proudest achievements.

The integration of the sister city program with Bandung, where Adipati Bertiga already has a significant presence, promises to set a benchmark and spark further community initiatives. We eagerly anticipate watching this movement grow and reach its full potential.

PJKita, your friendly neighborhood friend, is committed to making Petaling Jaya great again!

The history of Masjid Jamek Sultan Abdul Aziz, Jalan Templer, Petaling Jaya began in 1956 with the rise of a two-storey building on the current spot of the mosque, formerly known as ‘Surau Kawasan Melayu’ Petaling Jaya.

The old surau can occupy from 100-150 congregation members. In the early 60s, the surau changed from its wooden base to a concrete, shaped like a half-open umbrella. The new building is larger compared to the old surau and can occupy up to 300 congregation members.

The new building was officiated by DYMM Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Al-Haj Ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Hishamuddin Alam Shah Al-Haj, the Sultan of Selangor of that time on the 23rd October 1964, equivalent to 17th Rabiul Akhir 1384.

The building was officially named ‘Masjid Jamek Sultan Abdul Aziz’ in honour of the Sultan.

Any immediate neighbours and loyal attendees of the mosque that can share insight stories of this historical pj mosque? We want to hear our local stories 🤍

Petaling Jaya was a 1,200-acre rubber estate called the Effingham Estate. So how did a rubber estate become one of the most urbanized cities in our country? The answer lies in Petaling Jaya’s opportune geographical location.

An overcrowded Kuala Lumpur had led the British administration decided that a satellite town was the most logical solution. However, that was just one of the reasons Petaling Jaya was founded and growing exponentially in the 1950s. The main reason has something to do with the shift in the world’s geopolitical climate after the end of World War II which saw Eastern and Western Blocs struggling to become dominant global forces. This period was also known as the Cold War.

Sir Gerald Templer, dubbed the “Tiger of Malaya” was appointed British High Commissioner in Malaya by Winston Churchill on 22 January 1952 to specifically deal with the Malayan Emergency. During that tough period, the major decision he made as High Commissioner was relocating Malayan Chinese away from the jungles to newly built towns that were fenced off from the surrounding area. This limited the reach of the guerilla communists significantly.

One of these newly built towns was Petaling Jaya.

From township to city, this is how Petaling Jaya got its name and became the hub it is today. The Effingham Estate was seen as the perfect location for a new town to relocate the rural ethnic Chinese to as it could also be a satellite town for Kuala Lumpur due to its close proximity. It started off as a town measuring just over two square kilometres, with its first two main roads simply called “Jalan 1” and “Jalan 2“. this little pekan, or town in Malay, was the predecessor of what was to be known as ‘PJ Old Town‘ today. The name remains unchanged and it now includes Sections 1, 2, and 3 of Petaling Jaya.

By 1952, the new town began to take shape when 800 houses were built and another 200 under construction. In fact, mass migration to the town started even before the town was officially named ‘Petaling Jaya’ in 1953.

And the rest is history…

It was the keen foresight of the then Principal of Bukit Bintang Girls’ School, Miss Mary Glasgow, which actually led to the establishment and building of this school, Her vision of a brother school inspired her and Mr. David Angus, the first Chairman of the Board of Governors, to establish this school and lead it during the formative years. There would have been no Bukit Bintang Boys’ Secondary School without Miss Glasgow, and the boys owe their deepest appreciation to her foresightedness, services, prayers and financial and whole- hearted support for the setting up of the school and its development. Her successor at Bukit Bintang Girls’ School, Miss Elena Cooke, continued the good work.

Once the idea of setting up a brother school was formulated, the next question was, where it was going to be situated. It was at this time (1957-1958) that Petaling Jaya was opening up and starting a boys’ school here seemed encouraging and favorable. It was Miss Glasgow who walked the hills of Petaling Jaya and picked the site where the school is now situated. But before the foundation of any building was laid, the secondary level education of the Bukit Bintang Boys’ School was conducted in the left wing of the Bukit Bintang Boys’ Primary School. This was in early 1958.

When the school was being built, the Malay Mail called it the brother school of Bukit Bintang Girls School and named it Bukit Bintang Boys’ Secondary School. This name stuck on and ever since that day that was and is still the name of our school.

We want to hear from the alumni(s) about their beloved school! Hey ho lets go!!🔥🔥

Simon Justin Leo, a member of the legendary band Carefree, penned the iconic local anthem “Belaian Jiwa” in a Petaling Jaya hotel room at 3 AM after a show. Uniquely, Simon performed this song, while other hits were sung by bandmate JayJay. Petaling Jaya’s vibrant atmosphere significantly influenced this beautifully written song, which has become a second national anthem. Adding to its legacy, PJ native .amir and his band .malaysia reimagined it as a soulful ballad, cementing its timeless appeal.

La Salle School is a missionary school established by the De La Salle Brothers in 1959. The aim in building this new school was to ease tge pressure for places in St. John’s Institution, Kuala Lumpur, which was rapidly expanding at the time as well as cater for the needs of the growing township. Its enrolment, however consists of all races regardless of their religions.

The school motto, ‘SAPIENTA ET CARISTAS’ is Latin for ‘Wisdom and Love’.

The school was administered by the De La Salle Brothers until 1988. Since then, the heads have been lay individuals appointed by the Ministry of Education in consultation with the De La Salle Brothers in Malaysia.

Fun Facts about University Hospital PJ

Although the main hospital building was completed by December 1966, commissioning of the hospital and opening of the wards proceeded slowly mainly because of a shortage of nursing staff. The first patients were admitted in March 1967 and before the end of the year several wards had been opened together with the Polyclinic and Accident and Emergency Unit thus making available to the residents of Petaling Jaya and the adjoining area of Petaling Jaya and the adjoining area of Kuala Lumpur a hospital service on a 24-hour basis. By the end of 1969, all 758 beds were available for use. A new ward block of 112 bed was constructed in 1974 and commissioned providing for a total of 870 beds for the University Hospital.
