Why do some people gain weight faster than others? 👀

One of the contributing factors is our body’s response to saturated fats. 16% of the population has unfavorable response, which increases their risk of high LDL cholesterol and obesity for 20 to 30%! To minimize the risk, they need to eat 2 times less saturated fats than is generally recommended. 💁🏼‍♀️
Remember: losing weight shouldn’t mean starving! Instead, develop healthy eating habits which you will be able to follow even after you reach your desired weight. 🥦🍴
Buon appetito!

Alcohol intolerance test: Causes, symptoms, and methods

Symptoms of food or drink intolerance are uncomfortable and can make you feel ill, but are generally not very dangerous. They include nausea, gas, cramps, diarrhoea, and headaches.

A food or drink allergy is a different story. It happens when the body's immune system gets involved. It sees the food or liquid as an invader and it responds by releasing chemicals like histamine - that’s what we call an allergic reaction.

Such a reaction can cause more serious or even life-threatening symptoms like breathing problems, throat tightness, vomiting, swelling, or a drop in blood pressure.

Fortunately, most people who have a reaction to alcohol aren’t allergic to it. They have alcohol intolerance. As you’ll see, the reasons behind it can be very different.

What causes alcohol intolerance?
There are quite a few factors that appear to increase the likelihood of alcohol intolerance. Here are the most common ones:

enzyme deficiency,
being asthmatic,
having a diagnosis of Hodgkin’s lymphoma or damaged liver,
being of East Asian descent as this group is more prone to enzyme deficiency.
sulfites,
various preservatives,
ethanol as it increases gut permeability, allowing toxins and bacteria to pass into the bloodstream.
You may also have an inflammatory reaction to a certain ingredient in your alcoholic drink of choice. Most often, people are intolerant to:

grapes,
hops,
wheat, barley, rye, and grains,
yeast which ferments the alcohol,
seafood, egg, or fruit proteins present in beverages,
histamines.
The different causes are important when you’re choosing your alcohol intolerance test and how to handle the symptoms. To understand what exactly is happening in your body in some cases, especially when talking about an intolerance caused by enzyme efficiency, you should understand the role of your genes.

How can your genes cause alcohol intolerance
The reason for alcohol intolerance can be the defect of the gene which codes the enzyme ALDH2. This enzyme is responsible for the breakdown of acetaldehyde – an intermediate product in ethanol metabolism, which is even more toxic than ethanol itself. The defect of the ALDH2 gene causes your body to produce less active ALDH2, which prevents it from digesting alcohol properly. Acetaldehyde accumulates and causes alcohol intolerance.

Enzyme ADH1 is also important for alcohol metabolism. It is responsible for the first step of alcohol metabolism; converting ethanol into acetaldehyde. Researchers have discovered that a mutation can also occur in the genes that encode the ADH1 enzyme, which greatly influences the efficiency of ethanol conversion to acetaldehyde. Genetic variants increase ADH1 enzyme activity leading to the build-up of toxic acetaldehyde.

If you have alcohol intolerance, you may encounter one or several of these symptoms:

flushed face,
diarrhoea,
feeling hot,
headache,
dizziness,
heartburn,
hives (red bumps on your skin),
rashes,
faster heart rate or palpitations,
low blood pressure,
stuffy or runny nose,
stomach pain, which can lead to nausea or vomiting,
shortness of breath.
If you have asthma, your alcohol intolerance symptoms will be worse than usual.

However, if you have an alcohol allergy, you can experience more serious symptoms and severe reactions. Pay attention to the following symptoms and be ready to call an ambulance if they suddenly get worse:

rashes,
swelling,
difficulty breathing,
throat tightness,
stomach cramps,
vomiting,
drop in blood pressure,
loss of consciousness,
anaphylaxis, which is a severe allergic reaction that can include a rapid, weak pulse, nausea, and vomiting. You should immediately call an ambulance.
If you have been encountering any of the intolerance symptoms after drinking alcohol or are avoiding it because of it, you probably know you’re alcohol intolerant.

What you might not know is what is causing your intolerance. If you want to find out, you can take an alcohol intolerance test. Let’s see the options you have at your disposal.

Lactose intolerance test: 7 ways and methods

Many people experience discomfort after eating or drinking dairy products. Many suspect they are lactose intolerant but aren’t completely sure. And if you aren’t sure it’s hard to act. This article is here to help! We wrote it to clarify some things about lactose intolerance. It starts off with a bit of theory that’ll help you understand what exactly lactose intolerance is and who’s
predisposed to it.

What exactly is lactose intolerance?
Lactose intolerance means that your body cannot easily digest lactose, which is a type of sugar found in milk and some dairy products.

Like most sugars, lactose is broken down by enzymes during digestion. This happens in your intestinal tract so that your body can absorb it as an energy source. The enzyme responsible for breaking down lactose is called lactase.

Lactose intolerance occurs when your small intestine doesn’t make enough lactase enzyme to break down all ingested lactose. That means that too much lactose enters the large intestine and ferments there.

Fermentation is the reason why lactose intolerance causes uncomfortable symptoms such as gas, belly pain, diarrhoea and bloating.

There are different levels of being lactose intolerant. Some people can’t digest any milk products at all, others can consume a small amount without any problems. The variability happens because lactose intolerance is not an “all or nothing” deal, it simply means that you have lower lactase enzyme levels than normal.

It’s also important to note that lactose intolerance is not the same as milk or food allergy. Don’t confuse the two. If you have dairy allergy, your body reacts to the proteins in dairy products as if they’re dangerous invaders. It releases substances that cause allergy symptoms. This allergic reaction can be mild (rashes) to severe (trouble breathing, loss of consciousness).

Symptoms may include:

- bloating of your intestine and stomach area,
- abdominal pain or cramps in that area,
- rumbling sounds in your belly,
- gas,
- diarrhoea,
- vomiting.

Symptoms usually begin 30 minutes to 2 hours after ingesting anything that contains lactose. Many people suspect they might be lactose intolerant, but aren’t completely sure.

There are a few ways you can check if you are indeed lactose intolerant. We’ll start with three simple methods you can do at home and then move onto more scientific and clinical tests.

Simple check #1: Replace milk with lactose-free milk
Simple check #2: Limit yourself to low lactose cheeses
Simple check #3: Take a lactase enzyme pill with all dairy products
for a few weeks
DNA test: Are your genes hindering your lactase production?

How to treat lactose intolerance?
Although there is no cure for lactose intolerance yet, you can certainly control the symptoms by adjusting your diet.

It is very likely that you do tolerate a certain amount of lactose. Most lactose-intolerant people can consume 8-10 g of lactose daily without trouble, some even 50 g, but highly sensitive people have to limit it to 1 g daily at most. Observe your reaction to consumed lactose for a while, and determine how much lactose you tolerate.

To lower the amount of lactose in your diet you should limit the amount of milk and other dairy products or replace them with their lactose-free alternatives. If you can tolerate some lactose and want to eat a small amount of milk products, it’s best to do it in small servings with your regular meals.
If you are highly sensitive to lactose, pay attention to food labels on processed meat, margarine, bread, cereal, instant soups and gravies, cake mixes, and biscuits, because lactose can also be present in non-dairy foods

Boost your immune system with healthy food and habits
When flip flops give way to cosy sweaters, and we start missing the sun, it’s not just our mood that takes a hit. Lower temperatures, less sunshine and fresh air can weaken our defences. Get ready to fight back with our tips for a strong immune system!
Food for your immune system
When it comes to nutrition, eating whole food will do much more than gulping a handful of supplements. Except if you have medical conditions, you can get enough vitamins and minerals from eating diverse food.
Discover which nutrients are crucial for ramping up immune defences, and where to get your daily dose!
Vitamin C is considered a superhero of immunity. It increases the production of white blood cells which fight infections. Stock up on citrus fruits, but don’t forget other excellent sources of this vitamin – bell peppers, papaya, spinach, kiwi, kale, brussels sprouts, and strawberries.
Better known for its role in antioxidant protection than immunity, vitamin E is, in fact, crucial for regulating and maintaining the proper functioning of our immune system. You’ll get plenty with nuts and seeds, avocado, and leafy greens.
Vitamin A helps strengthen our immune system. For your daily dose, think colours – carrots, sweet potatoes, and pumpkins are rich in carotenoids which convert into vitamin A in our body. Combine them with liver, fish oils, milk, and eggs, and you’ll be covered.
In recent years, zinc has stepped up as an effective immunity booster. Research suggests that it does it by controlling and tampering potentially harmful inflammation. To get your dose of zinc, indulge in seafood – oysters, crab, lobster, and mussels are great sources. Too much zinc can inhibit our immune system, so do not overdo it.
The cells of our immune system can synthesise and respond to vitamin D, making it an important factor for fighting infections. In summer, you can get enough from sunlight, but in winter, make sure you eat oily fish, liver, and egg yolks. Because there aren’t many food sources, you can choose fortified foods or a quality vitamin D supplement.
Your genes might make you susceptible to lower levels of specific vitamins. Discover where you stand with a DNA test Vitamins and Minerals . It will reveal your genetic predispositions for micronutrients, including those with the strongest impact on your immune system!
Top 3 of immunity
For the best results, combine foods with different immunity-boosting properties. We’ve made a list of the powerhouse foods that pack a punch – make sure they’re regulars on your menu!
Honey has been praised for its medicinal purposes throughout human history. Research suggests it has antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory properties. Honey stimulates immunity by reducing inflammation and boosting the production of T and B lymphocytes, antibodies, natural killer cells, and other agents of your immune system.
For centuries, garlic has been hailed for its protective and curative benefits, and modern research supports its proclaimed advantages. Its potent organosulfur compounds might protect against microbial infections, cancer, inflammation, and enhance the immune system by stimulating certain cell types. If you happen to cross paths with a hungry vampire, it repels them too – or so claim the old stories!
Green tea, rich in antioxidants flavonoids, will level up not just your energy reserves, but also your immune system. Research suggests it can boost “regulatory T cells” that play a crucial role in immune function and suppression of autoimmune diseases. Scientists are also researching its ability to help control inflammation and prevent cancer.
Healthy habits, healthy you
There are no shortcuts to health, so an occasional orange won’t protect you from cold. It takes dedication and commitments to keep your body in peak condition. Here are six habits you should adopt to help your immune system excel at its job!
Don’t smoke. We won’t waste time listing many harmful effects of smoking, so don’t start if you’re a non-smoker, take care to avoid passive smoking, and seek help if you can’t get rid of the habit on your own.
Exercise regularly. Regular, moderate exercise may reduce inflammation and help your immune cells regenerate. Think jogging, brisk walking, cycling, swimming, or light hiking.
Eat fresh and balanced meals. Unprocessed food is richer in nutrients – not just vitamins and minerals, but also fibre. It supports healthy gut which many studies link with good immunity. When you can’t get your fruits and veggies fresh, choose frozen. They’re the best alternative to fresh produce, but make sure there’s no added sugar or salt.
Maintain a healthy weight. Excessive kilos don’t just put a strain on your belt but also your health. Maintain a healthy weight with regular physical activity and healthy nutrition.
Get enough quality sleep. There is a close connection between sleep and immunity, and research shows that cutting back on shut-eye can make you more susceptible to diseases. If you have trouble sleeping, check our blog, where we offer you long-term tips and quick-fixes for sound sleep.
Avoid stress. Finding yourself in stressful situation throws you off balance, and it has the same effect on your immune system. Do your best to avoid chronic stress. When that is not possible, engage in stress-relieving activities such as yoga, meditation, journaling, reading or anything else that calms your mind.
What works for me?
The condition of your immune system depends on a delicate balance of many factors, including your unique physique, so it can be hard to figure out what works best for yours. Luckily, you can take a peek into the functioning of our body.
A DNA test reveals your genetic predispositions for a wide variety of health-related traits. And with personalised recommendations, you will be able to adjust our tips and tricks to your unique needs.
Fine-tune your lifestyle and supercharge your immune defences!

Why caffeine doesn't work on you ? 😞🙄😳🧐

Caffeine is a stimulant, making you more alert and awake by speeding the transport of messages between your body and your brain. Chemically, it is an alkaloid found in seeds, nuts, and leaves of different plants, found mostly in South America and East Asia.

Caffeine is very quickly absorbed into your blood stream and you start feeling its effects within minutes of drinking it. They last until your body fully metabolises it. Although the response to caffeine is highly individual, in general, it affects you up to 6 hours, with a peak effect 15 to 45 minutes after drinking your coffee.

If you have a high caffeine sensitivity, you might feel it’s effects even until the next day.

Is caffeine dangerous?

In general, caffeine is not dangerous. Up to four cups of coffee – which contain around 400 mg of caffeine – is a safe amount for most healthy adults.

Who should avoid caffeine?

Pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers should drink no more than 200 mg of caffeine daily. Especially if you want to get pregnant, replace coffee with other drinks, as caffeine might affect fertility.

Caffeine is not recommended for children, and adolescents need to be careful with their consumption because they have a higher caffeine sensitivity. Because of its acidic nature, caffeine might irritate your stomach and even cause heartburn.

Discover, improve, live better

Caffeine is a must for millions, but even if you can’t enjoy its benefits, there’s still a lot you can do. Discovering your genetic predispositions and following personalised recommendations about caffeine intake will help you enjoy coffee without consequences or find healthy alternatives to help you be in control of your day.

Take a DNA test Metabolism and Lifestyle to discover your caffeine metabolism and other intriguing and useful facts about the functioning of your body!
