My favorite resident is Aunty Yuit Lan, and there are many reasons why. She’s a loving and generous person who always shares her food and treats me like her own daughter. I’ve learned so much from her, especially about the challenges of old age. Caring for her has taught me a great deal, and I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to be there for her. I’m committed to taking care of her to the best of my ability.

Aunty Wong, now 95, was admitted to Vida in April 2022 at age 91.

Despite being blind and hard of hearing, she had been independent at home, able to navigate to the toilet and eat on her own. Since her son and daughter-in-law worked and travelled often, daytime care was unavailable.

At Vida, she was assigned a bed near the toilet and initially continued to use it independently.

Over time, her frailty and dementia have progressed, and she now requires assistance. She remains dearly loved and is visited regularly by her family, including a granddaughter who travels from Singapore.

I first ventured into aged care in 1995 to help a friend who had lost their caregiving job, but the business ended due to poor partnerships. After working in maternity care and advocating for vulnerable babies, I felt a strong calling to return to aged care someday.

In 2016, with the right partner, I revived that dream and started again—this time determined to be hands-on with residents every day.

Dr Rema and I personally oversee both medical and rehabilitation decisions, ensuring continuous, high-quality care. This personal, family-like approach has become the defining feature of Vida and the key to its success.

Stories from Christina Anak Aken (team member at Vida Senior Care)

I’ve had many touching moments with patients at Vida, but one Aunty stays in my heart. She once shared that her relationship with her immediate family wasn’t good, but her siblings still came to visit and check on her. It reminded me that no matter how hard life gets, there are always people who care.

She used to tell me to keep a good relationship with my own siblings. Even though she could be difficult at times, I knew she was kind inside — just carrying a lot of pain. From her, I learned to look beyond someone’s attitude and see the heart behind it.
