👓 Refractive Error in Children with Down’s Syndrome

🔍 Key Findings
1. Hypermetropia → Present at all ages
2. No emmetropisation → Little change in spherical error across
childhood
3. Astigmatism → High and increases with age
4. 45% of teenagers had oblique astigmatism
5. Myopia → Very rare (≈8%) compared to general population

🧠 Why?
1. Abnormal eye growth
2. Reduced visual feedback (poorer visual acuity)
3. Eyelid mechanics → Oblique astigmatism

💡 Clinical Implications
1. 👶 Early & regular eye exams from infancy
2. 🕶️ Early optical correction
3. Full hypermetropic correction
4. Bifocals if accommodative deficit/strabismus

🎓 Aim: Prevent educational loss from uncorrected vision problems

🔍 主要发现
1. 远视 → 各年龄段均存在
2. 无正视化过程 → 球镜度数在整个童年变化很小
3. 散光 → 发病率高，且随年龄增加
4. 45% 青少年出现斜轴散光
5. 近视 → 极少见（约8%），远低于普通人群

🧠 原因
1. 眼球发育异常
2. 视觉反馈不足（视力较差）
3. 眼睑结构 → 诱发斜轴散光

💡 临床启示
1. 👶 婴儿期开始 早期和定期眼科检查
2. 🕶️ 早期光学矫正
3. 完全远视矫正
4. 如有调节功能障碍或斜视 → 使用双焦点(双光)眼镜

🔬 Is Your Child at Risk of Developing Myopia (Nearsightedness)?
Research by McCullough et al. (2020) has identified key risk factors to watch out for:

1.👪 A family history of myopia
2.📏 Longer eye length (axial length≥ 23.19 mm) at age 6–7
3.🔍 Low eye power (SER ≤ +0.19D) at age 6–7

👶✨ Did you know? Colour vision develops rapidly in the first few months of life! 👁️🌈
🔹 Newborns see the world in a blur, with very limited colour
perception.
🔹 By 2 months, babies start to tell apart reds, oranges, blues, and
greenish-blues.
🔹 But they may still struggle with yellowish-greens and purples.
🔹 By 3 months, most infants can recognise all colours.
🔹 Babies under 12 months often show a strong preference for
