Alphabet Activity During Hippotherapy 🐴✨

In this photo, a child is matching alphabet letters while riding a horse during a hippotherapy session. This activity isn’t just fun — it’s packed with developmental benefits too!

As the horse’s movement naturally challenges balance and posture, the child is working on core strength and stability without even realizing it. At the same time, picking up and placing the foam letters improves fine motor skills and hand–eye coordination.

Recognizing and arranging the letters supports cognitive skills like visual perception, letter recognition, and focus. Plus, the calming rhythm of the horse enhances sensory regulation, helping the child feel more centered and engaged.

With guidance from the occupational therapist, this hands-on learning experience also builds confidence, communication, and social interaction — making every hippotherapy session a holistic and enjoyable way to grow! 💜

“Core Connections: Prone Play Activity”
~ Hippotherapy

Strength, balance, and fun all in one ride!
Lying prone on the horse while “fishing” for toys builds core stability, motor planning, and hand-eye coordination — and the smiles say it all!

Working on strength, balance, and focus all while having fun!

Here, our student lies in a prone position across the horse’s back and reaches forward to “fish” for toys on a tray. This playful task is more than it seems, it helps build core muscles, improves coordination, and enhances body awareness, all important skills for everyday movement!

Activities like these make therapy sessions dynamic, engaging, and empowering for our students.

STANDING POSITION

Occupational therapist uses the horse’s back as a balance area, which OT can use to achieve the targeted therapeutic effect.

The positions of the client on the horse are chosen by the therapist based on knowledge of other physiotherapeutic methods and approaches.
