When an Engine Room Explosion Happens, Seconds Matter.

– Menstabilkan mangsa sebelum proses pemindahan

– Mengurangkan risiko jangkitan

– Mengikuti protokol rawatan berdasarkan International Medical Guide for Ships

Accidents will always be unpredictable. Preparation shouldn’t be.

International Medical Guide for Ships, 3rd Edition

The International Medical Guide for Ships (IMGS), 3rd Edition is one of the most essential medical publications required on board any seagoing vessel. Developed by the World Health Organization (WHO), this guide provides clear, practical, and step-by-step instructions for diagnosing and managing medical conditions at sea — especially when no doctor is available.

What makes this book invaluable is its structure. Every chapter is written in a way that allows non-medical personnel, including ship officers and designated medical responders, to quickly identify symptoms, assess severity, and apply the correct treatment. From injuries and infections to common illnesses and life-threatening emergencies, the guide offers straightforward explanations supported by diagrams, treatment tables, and decision pathways.

Onboard a ship, where medical help can be hours or days away, this guide serves as a critical quick reference. It helps crew members:

✅Recognise symptoms accurately

✅Decide when urgent intervention is needed

✅ Use the ship’s medicine chest correctly

✅Administer first-line treatment safely

✅Communicate effectively with telemedical support services (TMAS)

In emergencies, clarity saves lives. The IMGS 3rd Edition gives officers a dependable source of information that reduces hesitation, supports confident decision-making, and ensures the crew receives appropriate care until professional medical assistance is reached.

Having this guide onboard isn’t just about compliance — it’s about preparedness. It ensures that every vessel is equipped with the knowledge necessary to protect the health and safety of its people.

The Importance of Maintaining a Proper Medicine Chest Onboard

At sea, time becomes the quietest enemy. When an injury happens, when someone suddenly feels dizzy, or when early signs of infection appear, there is rarely an option to “check tomorrow” or “drop by a clinic.” That is why the medicine chest is not just a box of supplies — it is the crew’s first line of defence.

Life onboard is different from life ashore. Long voyages, unpredictable weather, heavy workloads, humidity, fatigue, and confined spaces all increase the risk of injuries and illnesses that can escalate quickly if not treated immediately. Without a well-maintained medicine chest, the crew is exposed to preventable dangers.

A properly maintained medicine chest should meet several essential requirements:
– Medications that are in-date and stored correctly
– Complete emergency treatment equipment
– Clear and accurate labelling
– Updated inventory records
– Easy and immediate access during emergencies
– Compliance with maritime standards and regulatory requirements

A small cut can turn into a serious infection if treatment is delayed. Chest discomfort dismissed as “normal” may actually signal something critical. While not every crew member is a medic, a well-prepared team with access to a functional medicine chest can prevent a situation from worsening.

In the maritime world, safety is not only about lifejackets, radars, or emergency drills. It is also about ensuring every crew member has access to fast, safe, and effective medical support. Maintaining the medicine chest is part of that responsibility.

Ultimately, a complete and well-maintained medicine chest is more than an operational requirement — it is a statement that the vessel values the lives onboard. Regular upkeep is not optional. It is essential.
