Did you know? Moderate exercise during lactation may increase the amount of IgA, the major antibody found in breastmilk!
Secretory IgA helps protect infants from infection by binding to the bacteria and viruses in the baby’s oral mucosa, nasal cavity, Eustachian tubes, and gastrointestinal tract and helps prevent them from entering the baby’s system and causing infection. IgA is personalized to the environment to which the baby and parent are exposed.
Dr. Amal El Taweel MD PhD IBCLC shared her findings from her study "Response of Breast Milk IgA to Supervised Moderate Aerobic Exercise: A Randomized Controlled Trial" recently at the International Conference of the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine. In her study 47 healthy, sedentary exclusive breastfeeding mothers in Cairo, Egypt were randomized to either a control group or supervised exercise three times a week for 4 weeks where they were supervised in maintaining their heart rates in a range between 60-70% of their maximum heart rate.
23 mothers were in this experimental group of supervised exercise, 24 mothers were in the control group. Both groups received nutritional and general lactation counseling. At the end of four weeks, there was no significant change in maternal weight, normal growth in both infant groups, but a marked increase in the amount of secretory IgA in the breastmilk in the experimental exercise group vs. the control group.
