This photo shows a corneal abrasion — a scratch on the clear front surface of the eye — seen under fluorescein dye and blue light.

Corneal abrasions can be caused by:
• Rubbing the eye
• Dust or foreign bodies
• Contact lenses
• Fingernails or accidental trauma

Common symptoms include:
