ECRI met with Indonesia’s 𝗗𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗼𝗳 𝗣𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗰𝗲𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗠𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀, the 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗠𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝘂𝗳𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗿𝘀, and the 𝗝𝗮𝗸𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗮 𝗖𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗠𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗙𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 to discuss how independent, evidence-based evaluations can enhance the safety and quality of locally manufactured medical devices.

Both regulators and manufacturers expressed interest in partnering with ECRI to independently evaluate devices and align with international standards. We look forward to advancing a shared vision of safer, higher-quality healthcare for Indonesia.

AI is transforming healthcare, but not without risks.

ECRI’s latest alert highlights how underreporting of AI-enabled device issues can lead to poor care outcomes. Let’s ensure technology serves patients safely.

🚨 ECRI Alert: Underreporting of AI-Enabled Device Events

ECRI released an exclusive special report to members highlighting how underreporting of adverse events involving AI-enabled medical devices can contribute to ineffective, poor quality patient care.

💡 ECRI’s Recommendations:

✅ Recognize reportable AI events.
✅Identify products that have AI — the FDA provides a database of cleared AI-enabled medical devices to confirm AI use.
✅ Conduct risk assessments for AI-enabled devices.
✅ Educate service-line staff to recognize possible adverse outcomes with their specific AI-enabled devices and report suspected events.
✅ Report concerns to ECRI and the FDA.
✅ ECRI members should also review: “ECRI Guidance Problem Reporting and AI-Enabled Devices: A Quick Guide.”

⚠️ Indicators AI may be involved in an adverse event:

• Unexpected outputs: Sudden, inconsistent results may point to AI errors.
• False positives or negatives: Even within normal performance metrics, AI can produce inaccurate predictions.
• Misclassifications: Underrepresented data (e.g., women or minority groups) can skew AI predictions.
• Inconsistent interactions: Frustrating or irrelevant chatbot/assistant responses may indicate “hallucinations.”
• Predictive failures: Incorrect forecasts or unexplained inaccuracies could suggest AI performance issues.

In collaboration with BPAFK Jakarta, ECRI held a 𝗠𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗲 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗽 in Bali, bringing together healthcare professionals and regulators to strengthen capacity in device safety and post-market surveillance.

Participants gained practical insights into identifying, reporting, and preventing medical device adverse events; a vital step toward safer healthcare systems across the region.
