That was how an 10-year-old child described himself two weeks after starting treatment for ADHD.
He had been struggling in class for some time โ unable to sustain attention, easily distracted, and mentally overwhelmed. Learning was hard, not because he didnโt want to try, but because his thoughts were constantly competing for space.
After a proper assessment, we started a structured plan:
- Occupational therapy to support attention, regulation, and classroom functioning
- Concurrent stimulant medication, carefully dosed and monitored
At follow-up, his mother shared this sentence that stayed with me:
โMy head is less noisy now.โ
This is something many children with ADHD struggle to put into words. ADHD is not just about being โactiveโ or โnaughtyโ โ for many children, it feels like constant mental noise that makes focusing exhausting.
When are stimulants indicated in ADHD?
Based on international guidelines, stimulant medication may be recommended when:
A child meets diagnostic criteria for ADHD
Symptoms significantly impair learning, behaviour, or daily functioning
Non-pharmacological support alone is insufficient
Treatment is part of a structured, monitored plan
Medication is not a shortcut, and it is not used alone. The best outcomes come from combining therapy, school support, parenting strategies, and โ when appropriate โ medication.
For some children, stimulants donโt change who they are.
They simply turn down the noise โ so the child can finally focus, learn, and be themselves.
If youโre unsure whether your childโs struggles are โnormalโ or something more, an early discussion can make a meaningful difference.
