🦟 Strengthening Malaria Awareness at LevasFlor’s Sawmill

Yesterday, July 17th, 2025, LevasFlor organized a malaria awareness session for its employees working at the sawmill in Condue, reaffirming our commitment to occupational health and community well-being.

What made this session especially meaningful is that it was led by six community members trained in malaria prevention at the Posto de Saúde de Condue. These dedicated individuals shared essential information with our team about:

🔹 Malaria transmission and symptoms
🔹 Prevention strategies at home and at work
🔹 Early detection and the importance of seeking treatment promptly
🔹 Use of mosquito nets and environmental hygiene

This initiative reflects our integrated approach to Health, Safety, and Hygiene (HSH) — recognising that community health and workplace safety go hand in hand.

We are grateful to our local partners and the health professionals involved, and to the six community trainers who are helping bring positive change and knowledge into both the workplace and their own communities.

Together, we are building a safer and healthier future for all. 💚

🇬🇧 This past weekend, the LevasFlor team gathered at the Codzue Caves, near Inhaminga, for a special moment of sharing, introspection, and strengthening bonds.

The workshop, led by our colleague Jaime Couto Junior, was based on Thomas Erikson’s DISC model, which identifies four distinct personality styles and analyses how each profile interacts with the others.

The DISC model categorises behaviours into: Dominance, Influence, Steadiness and Conscientiousness

These profiles are also widely known through the colour-coded framework: Red, Yellow, Green, and Blue — a concept made popular by Erikson’s book “Surrounded by Idiots”.

This initiative is part of our ongoing commitment to the personal and professional development of our team. We believe that understanding others is essential to working with empathy, efficiency and purpose.

In an inspiring natural setting, we promote more than just team building — we promote understanding and cohesion.

🇲🇿 No último fim de semana, a equipa da LevasFlor reuniu-se nas Grutas de Codzue, perto de Inhaminga, para um momento especial de partilha, introspecção e fortalecimento de laços.

O workshop, conduzido pelo nosso colega Jaime Couto Junior, baseou-se no modelo DISC de Thomas Erikson, que identifica quatro estilos distintos de personalidade e analisa como cada perfil interage com os outros.

O modelo DISC categoriza os comportamentos em: Dominância, Influência, Estabilidade e Conscienciosidade.

Esses perfis também são amplamente conhecidos através da estrutura codificada por cores: Vermelho, Amarelo, Verde e Azul — um conceito popularizado pelo livro de Erikson, “Surrounded by Idiots” (Cercado por Idiotas).

Blessing Ceremony

Yesterday marked a very special moment in the LevasFlor forest: a traditional ceremony led by the Regulo of Maziamboça to bless the beginning of our harvesting campaign.

During the ceremony, the Regulo called upon the spirits of his ancestors to bring protection and success to our work. He placed different alcoholic beverages, food, and ci******es on the ground as offerings, while pouring flour into a small mound with spoken invocations.

This morning, we returned to the site to check whether the mound of flour and sugar remained untouched — and it was. According to tradition, this is a clear sign that the blessing was accepted, and that we are spiritually cleared to begin the 2025 harvesting campaign.

We are deeply grateful to the Regulo for his presence, his words, and the positive energy he brought to our work. May this campaign unfold in harmony with nature and with the people who are part of it. 🌱✨

Cerimónia de Bênção

Ontem, teve lugar um momento muito especial na floresta da LevasFlor: uma cerimónia tradicional conduzida pelo Regulo de Maziamboça, que veio abençoar o início da nossa campanha de abate.

Durante a cerimónia, o Regulo invocou os antepassados da sua família para trazer proteção e sucesso à nossa campanha. Colocou no chão diferentes bebidas alcoólicas, comida e ci****os como oferendas, enquanto, com palavras de invocação, ia colocando farinha sobre um pequeno montinho.

Esta manhã, regressámos ao local para verificar se o montinho de farinha e açúcar permanecia intacto — e estava. Segundo a tradição, este é um sinal claro de que a bênção foi aceite, e de que estamos espiritualmente autorizados a iniciar a campanha de abate de 2025.

Agradecemos ao Regulo pela sua presença, pelas suas palavras e pela energia positiva que trouxe ao nosso trabalho. Que esta campanha decorra em harmonia com a natureza e com as pessoas que dela fazem parte. 🌱✨

At LevasFlor, near the water courses, you’ll find Kahia nyasica (umbaua), a beautiful native tree that produces distinctive woody capsules. These capsules naturally fall to the ground and are an interesting part of the forest’s ecosystem.

Their tough structure and unique shape make them stand out.

Keep an eye out next time you’re near the river—you might just come across one! 🌱💧

With the arrival of the rainy season, orchids can be seen growing on the tree trunks at LevasFlor. These are epiphytic orchids, meaning they grow on trees without drawing nutrients from them, relying instead on moisture and nutrients from the air and rain.

The increased humidity and warm temperatures provide the right conditions for their development.

🌍✨ Meet our surprise visitor from the Miombo woodlands: a young African Wood Owl! 🦉
One of our team members at LevasFlor recently found this juvenile owl outside their home. As young owls start exploring their surroundings, they sometimes end up on the ground, still mastering the skills needed to return to the trees. These early adventures are part of their journey to becoming independent!

The Miombo Forest is a biodiversity hotspot, filled with unique species that depend on one another to thrive. Encounters like this inspire us to keep working toward the conservation of these ecosystems, so future generations can witness the wonders of nature up close.
