REASON 9: Evolution

Why do you do the things that you do? Why do you try? Why do work? Why do you go to the gym or practice yoga? Why do you want to have a better relationship?

Ultimately, we all want to be better! We want to improve, strive to be the best… strive to be enough. But I tell you, if you take a closer look at your answers to the question why, you’ll quickly realise that they are all conjured up by your ego. And it is a TRAP because you will never arrive at a place where you feel you are better, you are the best, you are enough.

The only source of true EVOLUTION is LOVE. Absolute. Unconditional. Unfailing. Deep. Love. You see, you already are all the things that you wish to be. You only have to open your eyes and watch the changes unfold.

The sun shines, the rain falls and the green grass grows all from the impetus of unconditional love.

The caterpillar makes no effort whatsoever to evolve into a butterfly. It does not need to learn anything or have a one year plan. It simply exists as it is - as a perfect expression of The Artist. And it evolves as part of the perfect pattern of The Art.

I meditate because it teaches me true unconditional LOVE. This body is perfect, this mind is perfect, this moment is perfect exactly as it is. And SO ARE WE ALL!

REASON 8: expansion

Have you ever tried to sit still for a while? But really, a b s o l u t e l y s t i l l

One by one, your boundaries soften. After some time, all that exists are a pulsation of sensations appearing and disappearing… the effortless cycle of breath…

Your skin is gone… dissolved as if it never existed in the first place.

And there is your heart quietly beating in the dark the drum of life i AM i AM i AM…

What is inside and what is outside of “I”? The boundary is not so clear anymore.

i AM all and i AM none
i AM that ~ sa ham
I AM the nameless that,
which is behind all in creation

I meditate because it teaches me that I am not small. i AM the same creative force that creates worlds.

REASON 7: the only constant is change

Stand still, close your eyes. As you take a long slow exhale, soften the jaw and drop your attention deep into the heart centre…
It’s like dropping deep into the ocean on a stormy electric night.

There on the surface, the chaos of life is ever-in-flux. Nature is cycling. But here in the centre of you, you can always find the still point, the resting place, the safety of home 💙

I meditate because it shatters the illusion that I can control what happens on the outside and invites the security that on the inside I AM…. and that is enough.

Quiet the mind, open the heart. Quiet the mind, open the heart. Quiet the mind, open the heart….

REASON 6: Learning to STAY

You sit down, take a deep breath, get still and begin to meditate… Immediately your mind throws out one million reasons to leave, to move, to escape.

“I’m just too tired today. There’s a mosquito biting me. I have too much work to get done. I can’t stop thinking about the fight that I had with my husband…”

The excuses are endless 😅! You must to renew your determination many many times… TO STAY

The truth is that the idea of doing nothing is very scary to most of us. All of our “stuff” comes up to the surface. Some sensations are acceptable, enjoyable even. But others make us want to run!

From childhood, most of us develop ways to escape when the going gets tough. We’ll do anything to avoid really feeling the discomfort.

And society supports our escaping, numbing habits like - social media scrolling, workaholism, multi-tasking, smoking, drinking, noise and chaos, over- and under- eating, never-ending self-development… do do do and do some more. Anything to avoid being still and just FEELING.

I meditate because it teaches me to resist the temptation to run away. And when I am empowered to fiercely stay with me, no matter what comes up, I learn that I truly can RELY ON MYSELF.

REASON 5: LEARNING TO FAIL IS SUCCESS

When I tell people that I teach meditation, often their response is, “I could never meditate, my mind is too chaotic…” 🤪

***NEWSFLASH*** We all have a busy mind! Yes, we ALL do. You are not alone in that experience! The difference between a meditator and someone who won’t give it a try is simply this; how do they face FAILURE?

In one sitting of meditation, perhaps you “mess-up” 100 times. You realise, “Oh s***! I lost the meditation, I was thinking about breakfast 🤔…”

THAT MOMENT, the moment when you messed up.. again 🙄… is where the juice is! Many of us feel irritated at ourselves. There is this voice that says, “Why can’t I just stay focused? I’m useless, I’ll never get this!” We allow that voice to defeat us...

Learning to meditate means facing that voice over and over and over again. You learn to trade irritation and self-flagellation for MAITRI or Loving-Kindness. Absolute compassion is the only weapon against that punishing voice in your head.

I meditate because it teaches me to look failure in the eye, smile and pick myself up and try again, and again, and again…

10 reasons why I MEDITATE
REASON 4 ~THE CAGE IS IMAGINARY

Cultivating a daily practice (Sadhana) has been a long and obstacle-filled journey for me. Along the way I realised something about discipline. It goes like this;

Society imposes an imaginary necessity of busy-ness. So we adopt the belief that if we are not producing something, we aren’t worthy.

If you take a time-out from go,go,go to just BE, inevitably this little voice of sabotage in your mind begins listing all the reasons why you do not deserve this time-out. It says that you should be doing something “more productive and useful”. “In any case”, the voice says, “you’ll never be any good at this meditation thing anyway”…

The sabotage manifests as endless EXCUSES to skip your Sadhana practice. When you feel good and strong, you practice. But then sometimes you think, ‘I just don’t feel like it’ and you skip practice.

The twisted IRONY of it all is this; you think that you are exerting your free will by permitting yourself to be flakey. BUT that voice in The Mind IS THE CAGE that is imprisoning you. The Mind forces you to do what IT wants against YOUR own free will! In the end, overcoming the egoic urges of the mind is true FREE WILL.

Meditation has brought me to a place where I can give myself permission to have daily time-out in Sadhana. Where I have no specific result to attain, nothing to produce, nothing to perform for anyone else … I meditate because it teaches me that DISCIPLINE IS FREEDOM.

REASON 3: WHAT YOU ARE LOOKING FOR IS RIGHT HERE

We spend all our lives seeking THE TRUTH. Yet, when we become quiet and still, we realise you don’t have to go looking for the truth. The truth just IS. What you are looking for is the untruth; all those things that obscure our view to see the simple, ordinary yet unimaginably exquisite truth of the true I.

The mistake of looking outside for oneSelf is like this story of a yogini who, trying to find herSelf, spent endless hours looking through a window at the outside. Until one day, her eyes changed focus and she realised that all along her reflection was right there in the window looking back at her.

Perhaps those on the path should stop calling themselves “seeker” and start to call themselves “SEE-ER” 🤔

Meditating teaches me to spot the barrage of untruths that are illusions of my mind and see the Self that is silent underneath it all. I meditate because I want to know mySelf.

REASON 2: The Honey Bee

One yogic teaching speaks of 3 types of spiritual seekers. The Elephant has a lot of strength and stamina but cannot sort the sugar from the sand. The Ant can sort sand from sugar but cannot store the sugar. The most powerful seeker is THE BEE who can find the sugar, turn it into honey and STORE IT FOR LATER.

It’s no coincidence that the Sanskrit word AMRTR simultaneously means ELIXIR OF LIFE and SWEET NECTAR and IMMORTALITY. Because when we are absolutely present, viscerally experiencing the juiciness in the ordinary, time slows down, time becomes infinite…

Instead, the sad truth is that most of us most of the time are “doing life” in AUTOPILOT MODE - absent, sleep-walking… In this state, time is devoured at a rate we can never seem to catch up with. It feels as if there is never enough time.

In meditation, our senses are ALIVE! Even the simple smell of the space can be endlessly delightful!

I meditate because it teaches me how to squeeze the sweet nectar out of simple things in life, to BE ALIVE instead of to just “do life”.

10 reasons I MEDITATE: REASON 1 ~ Self-LOVE

“Am I doing this out of LACK or am I doing this out of LOVE?”
With any thought, word or action, I like to bring this question to the fire 🔥 of truth in my heart.

There is a pandemic of “NOT ENOUGH-NESS” in our society. We feel we don’t HAVE enough, we are not DOING enough, we ARE NOT enough. We are in a constant state of LACK - a “POVERTY” of “enough-ness”.

In that state, we normalize choosing from a place of LACK. We grasp at external things, fear to let go. Or we push things away, fear to let them close…

When we finally arrive at stillness in meditation, we get to sit with THE TRUTH = I AM ENOUGH. In this state, you don’t NEED anything except to breathe. You don’t need water or food. You don’t need someone to love you. You don’t need to get anything done. You don’t need anything that is sourced from outside. Just to BE. Just to BE…

MAPUTO WEEKEND WORKSHOP 1 & 2 April 07.30-12.00 at Soul Sanctuary in Gloria Mall

You know when it is time. There is a lingering question deep inside quietly repeating, “Is this it? Is that all there is to it? Is that all there is to life?”

You see, once you have a glimpse of the truth in you, you cannot “un-know” what you know. And now you have no option but to seek for the answer to that question.

And so the beautiful adventure begins… 👣🤍
