Kombat Town

Kombat Town It is situated 37 kilometres (23 mi) East of Otavi on the B8 to Grootfontein. Minerals were discovered near Kombat in 1850.

Kombat (the place of the giraffe) is a private former mining town and its associated settlement at the southern margin of the Otavi Mountain Range in northern Namibia. Kombat Town has been revived with an expected 3,000 inhabitants forgoing the Opening of Welwitchia University Campus, Primary School, Grade 12 Bridging School and Private Pre-primary School. The Town is serviced by a Government Kombat Primary School , clinic and a Police Station is serving the remaining inhabitants. Welwitchia University is set to open the 2nd Clinic which will be a Private Clinic among other services for the Community. Around the year 1900, Kombat Mine was opened to extract copper.It was operated by Tsumeb Corporation Limited until the 1970s and by Ongopolo Mining as from 1999. In 2006 Ongopolo and the mine were taken over by Weatherly International PLC, a mining house based in London. Soon thereafter in 2007 the mine flooded, was abandoned, and has been dormant since . In 2015 Namibian businessman Knowledge Katti acquired the town and has opened door to pro development initiatives which set to provide employment for the locals. Nambulite, a very rare gem, from Kombat Mine. The sample size is 0.7 x 0.6 x 0.4 cm. Besides copper, there are sizeable deposits of lead and silver. The mine is known for a host of rare minerals, including glaucochroite.
