Over N$800,000 raised for N$1 million reward for tips leading to rhino poachers’ arrest

Staff Reporter

MORE than N$800,000 has been raised to fund a N$1 million reward aimed at securing information leading to the arrest and prosecution of those who recently poached a pregnant black rhino, known as Dorsland, and her calf.

“Following an intensive fundraising campaign over the weekend — initiated on Facebook and fuelled by overwhelming public support — over N$800,000 has already been raised to fund a N$1 million reward for information leading to the arrest and successful prosecution of those responsible for the brutal poaching of the black rhino known as Dorsland, along with her calf, and her unborn calf,” Ultimate Safaris Managing Director, Tristan Cowley, said.

He explained that the initiative began with a pledge of N$100,000 from the Conservation Travel Foundation, supported by Ultimate Safaris, along with a personal contribution of N$50,000 from Cowley himself. The rest of the contributions, he added, came from Namibians from all walks of life. He highlighted this as a clear demonstration of how deeply this tragedy resonates within the nation.

“The intention of the reward, and the raising of funds therefore, is to send a clear and powerful message that informants are more valuable than poachers. That poaching in the Kunene Region will be met with a strong and united response, not only from law enforcement, but from the people of Namibia, and especially from the Kunene communities and conservancies who protect the world’s largest population of free-roaming, critically endangered black rhino,” Cowley said.

He urged those who want to donate to the cause to reach out via email to jason@conservationtravelfoundation.org.
