Bell’s Palsy Recovery: A Physiotherapy Success Story

When "Ms S" woke up one morning, she noticed that one side of her face wouldn’t move properly. Her smile was uneven, her eye wouldn’t close fully, and simple tasks like eating and speaking suddenly felt difficult. She was diagnosed with Bell’s palsy.

Like many patients, Ms S felt anxious and unsure if her face would ever return to normal.

She started physiotherapy early, focusing on:

😀Gentle facial muscle activation
😀Relaxation and symmetry training
😀Mirror feedback to retrain controlled movement
😀Education on eye care and daily facial habits

At first, progress felt slow — small movements, subtle changes. But week by week, facial control improved. Her eye closure became stronger, her smile more balanced, and tightness reduced.

After several weeks of consistent physiotherapy and home exercises:
✔️ Facial symmetry improved
✔️ Muscle control returned
✔️ Daily activities felt normal again

Today, Ms S has regained functional facial movement and understands how to maintain healthy facial patterns long-term.

Recovery from Bell’s palsy is a journey — and physiotherapy can play a vital role in guiding that recovery.

Patient Success Story: How Physiotherapy Helped After Lung Cancer Surgery

Meet “Mr. L.” — a 65-year-old who underwent surgery for non-small cell lung cancer. Like many patients, his recovery after lung resection was challenged by shortness of breath, fatigue, and reduced exercise tolerance.

After surgery, Mr. L joined an 8-week outpatient pulmonary rehabilitation programme that included:
• Breathing exercises
• Aerobic training
• Strength and functional exercises
• Education on managing symptoms

After completing the programme, Mr. L experienced significant improvements in:
• Exercise capacity — he could walk farther and feel less breathless
• Breathing comfort — less effort required during daily tasks
• Quality of life scores — better energy, mood, and confidence
• Reduced anxiety and psychological symptoms compared with just basic breathing training alone

💡 Takeaway: Physiotherapy doesn’t just help with symptoms — when structured and supervised, it can enhance recovery, reduce breathlessness, and improve quality of life after major cancer treatment.

New Research: Exercise Before Lung Cancer Surgery Helps Patients

This study supports the idea that individualised exercise prescriptions — even started before surgery — can positively impact recovery, strength, and quality of life for people with lung cancer.

🫁 Physiotherapy Exercises for People Living With Lung Cancer

Exercise plays an important role in helping people with lung cancer breathe easier, reduce fatigue, and maintain strength. Exercises are always adapted to the individual’s energy levels and medical treatment.

💨 1. Breathing Exercises

✔ Diaphragmatic breathing – improves lung expansion and reduces breathlessness
✔ Pursed-lip breathing – helps control shortness of breath during activity

👉 Perform slowly, focusing on relaxed breathing.

🪑 2. Gentle Upper Body Exercises

✔ Shoulder lifts and arm raises
✔ Seated arm movements coordinated with breathing

👉 Helps open the chest, improve posture, and assist breathing mechanics.

🦵 3. Functional Strengthening

✔ Sit-to-stand from a chair
✔ Gentle leg strengthening

👉 Maintains independence and reduces muscle weakness caused by inactivity.

🚶 4. Light Aerobic Activity

✔ Short walks
✔ Marching on the spot

👉 Improves endurance and reduces cancer-related fatigue.

Physiotherapy for lung cancer is about:
• Conserving energy
• Managing breathlessness
• Staying safely active
• Improving quality of life

Exercises should always be guided and individualised by a physiotherapist, especially during or after cancer treatment.

🫁 Common Conditions Associated With Lung Cancer

Lung cancer does not only affect the lungs — it can lead to several secondary conditions that impact breathing, movement, and overall quality of life.

Common conditions include:

• Shortness of breath (dyspnoea) – due to reduced lung capacity or airway obstruction
• Chest infections – such as pneumonia from impaired airway clearance
• Pleural effusion – fluid build-up around the lungs causing breathing difficulty
• Persistent cough – often dry or productive
• Fatigue and deconditioning – related to cancer itself and its treatment
• Muscle weakness and weight loss – due to reduced activity and systemic effects
• Postural changes and chest wall stiffness – affecting breathing mechanics

Let's take a closer look at Lung Cancer!

What is lung cancer?
Lung cancer occurs when abnormal cells grow uncontrollably in the lungs, forming tumours that interfere with normal breathing and oxygen exchange. It is one of the most common and serious cancers worldwide.

⚠️ Risk Factors for Lung Cancer

While anyone can develop lung cancer, risk increases with:

• Smoking (active or passive/second-hand smoke)
• Exposure to air pollution
• Occupational exposure (asbestos, chemicals, dust)
• Previous lung disease (e.g. COPD, pulmonary fibrosis)
• Radiation exposure
• Family history of lung cancer

Physiotherapy supports individuals before, during, and after lung cancer treatment by:

✔ Improving breathing efficiency
✔ Reducing breathlessness
✔ Assisting with airway clearance

Physiotherapy works alongside medical and oncology care to help patients stay as active and independent as possible.
