Today is Crazy Socks 4 Docs Day!
The aim is to break-down the stigma around mental health issues in doctors and health professionals.
βDoctors around the world are invited to show their support for doctors experiencing mental illness by wearing crazy socks.
To spread the message and encourage doctors to start talking about their mental health, people are encouraged to take a photo of their colourful, silly, bright, zany socks and share it on social media using the hashtag .
The campaign was started last year by Peninsula Health cardiologist Dr Geoff Toogood, who has championed mental health support for doctors after his own battle with mental illness.
βIt is so important that doctors start talking to each other, to their family and friends about mental illness,β says Dr Toogood.
βHaving a conversation about how youβre feeling is the first step.β
βDoctors need to look after each other, so that we can look after everyone else.β
The idea for Crazy Socks 4 Docs all started when Dr Toogood wore odd socks to work one day.
βA person who knew my past mental health history noticed and asked someone else whether in fact I was well and what was going on,β explained Dr Toogood.
βThe actual reason I was wearing odd socks was because Iβd just bought a dog and it had mauled all the washing so they were the only two socks I had!β
The interaction was the catalyst for Dr Toogood to start Crazy Socks 4 Docs.β
