Dr Pieter Troost - ENT Specialist - Namibia Dr. Troost is a ENT specialist in medical and surgical management of ear, nose and throat problems. He also focuses on problems with snoring and sleep apnea.

Dr Troost specializes as a general ENT surgeon in Namibia. His training at Groote Schuur Hospital and Red Cross Childrens Hospital as well as attending numerous national and international congresses on an ongoing basis has equipped him well to diagnose and treat conditions of the Ear-Nose and Throat region. He has been in private ENT practice for the last 15 years working out of Panorama Medi-clinic and more recently from the newly built Cape Gate Medi-clinic with its state of the art equipment and facilities. In Windhoek his consultation rooms is situated at Circle Medical Center in Ausspanplatz. He also does his practice in Swakopmund, Walvisbay and Okahandja. Ear infections, also known as otitis, can affect both children and adults, targeting either the middle ear or the outer ear.

- Middle ear infections (otitis media) often appear after a cold.
- Outer ear infections (otitis externa or “swimmer’s ear”) are linked to water in the ear canal and become more common in summer.

Excessive snoring can hold you back from a great nights’ rest and cause you to be tired and irritable during the day.

What causes snoring you ask?

The noisy sounds of snoring occur when there is an obstruction to the free flow of air through the passages at the back of the mouth and nose. This area is the collapsible part of the airway where the tongue and upper throat meet the soft palate and uvula. Snoring occurs when these structures strike each other and vibrate during breathing. In children, snoring may be a sign of problems with the tonsils and adenoids.

Nosebleeds may occur often, if they persist you need to let a doctor have a look!

If you get a nosebleed, don’t blow your nose. Doing so can cause additional nosebleeds. Also, don’t tilt your head back. This common practice will cause blood to run into your throat, which can make you cough or choke, and if you swallow a lot of blood, you might begin vomiting.

Once you’ve stopped the initial nosebleed by applying pressure to the nose, don’t lift heavy objects or do other activities that cause you to strain, and try not to blow your nose for 24 hours.
