TMI - but I just had my first preventative colonoscopy earlier this month. And don’t worry - I survived, got a clean bill of health, and can now confidently say I’ve checked that box on adulting.

In all seriousness, March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, and I’m sharing this because if it helps even one person take their health seriously, it’s worth it. Colon cancer is showing up earlier and earlier in adults, so screenings are important even if you’re just over 40 like me.

The guidelines recommend colon cancer screenings starting at age 45 for most, but some individuals should start earlier. Colonoscopies are a powerful tool for preventing colon cancer or catching it early. They’re also not the only option and may not be the first recommendation from your healthcare provider. Simple stool tests and other screenings can also make a difference. But if you’re due or thinking about it, talk to your doctor about your individual risks and what screening options make sense for you.

At the end of the day, taking care of ourselves is important, but it’s even better when we can make it easier for our whole community to stay healthy. That’s why we created Tulsa’s first Office of Health and Well-Being that now brings healthcare providers together to share resources and spark conversations about preventive care that might not have happened otherwise.

So, if you’re due for a screening - go get it. And yes, it’s a little awkward, but it’s totally worth it.👍🏿

I was going through some old records today and cleaning out some files and discovered this.

This picture really makes me appreciate life. This was the view from my colonoscopy in 2012. I had just turned 40 and this little 2.5cm spot in my colon could have killed me.

Next month is Colon Cancer Awareness Month. Make sure you get checked out if you have any symptoms.

It is pictures like this that make you appreciate life and not sweat the small stuff. I hear people all the time talk about day to day simple things that ruin their day - time is too precious for that.
