Inspirational evening🦋

The Lupus Awareness Talk was a huge success! Not only did we have a room packed with advocates, patients, carers, family members, friends, and speakers, we had the privilege to welcome Honourable Dr. Esther Muinjangue (Deputy Minister in the Ministry of Health & Social Services for the Government of the Republic of Namibia) who graced us with her presence.

Dr Juline Smit (Specialist Physician/Internist) kicked started the evening by welcoming the crowd who has been affected by lupus.
She shared valuable information and facts about the many faces of the autoimmune disease. For instance, did you know ninety percent (90%) of people living with lupus are women and most people with lupus develop the disease between the ages of 15-44?

The next two speakers (apologies - WARRIORS!) were Ms. Winnie Katataiza and Ms. Agi Serogwe. They inspired everyone in the room with how they've been diagnosed, their journey by overcoming obstacles and how they are fighting and keeping the faith.

Mrs. Suzan Smit (Dietician) gave useful tips on how to manage lupus by eating right, saying that a planned healthy diet means that a patient can help their body fight this disease better.

With lupus, the immune system attacks instead of protects the body, including the brain and nervous system. Lupus and its treatments can impair mental & emotional health. Mrs. Harriet Knott (Psychologist) said that there is no health without mental health. She encouraged everyone that while it is not easy living with the disease, that you should be inspired by the symbol for lupus: A Butterfly. From hardships come growth and strength!

Our Honourable Deputy Minister concluded the evening by praising the patients and their support structures. She expressed that she herself has learned so much about the disease, but she is mostly moved by the turnout. She was glad to see that patients are the advocates, and they are the ones driving the awareness campaigns.

And finally, a big thank you to Sun Pharma for your support in this worthy cause.

Protein shakes 🥤..can really harm your kidneys and soooo much worse if you already have struggling kidneys😧

Protein shakes 🥤..can really harm your kidneys and soooo much worse if you already have struggling kidneys😧

What do protein shakes have to do with your kidneys?

🏋🏼‍♂️In our very "pro-protein" culture, a simple google search (or, trip to the gym), would make you think that everyone should be eating more protein - and that protein shakes, powders and bars are the best way to do that!

🥩However, did you know that MOST people are eating MORE protein than they need? Yes, even for muscle growth.

🙅🏼‍♀️Eating too much protein increases your risk for kidney stones. It also makes your kidneys work harder and can cause faster progression of kidney disease. Eeek!

🥤Adding extra protein - especially with SUPER concentrated powders - can EASILY send you over your daily protein goal.

💡Remember that everyone is different. Ask your dietitian how much protein is right for you and your kidneys!
