Not everyone is a good candidate for laser vision correction and that’s important to understand.

Factors such as high prescriptions, thin corneas, early lens changes or dry eye can make laser procedures less suitable or less predictable in the long term. In these cases, treating the lens itself often provides a more effective and lasting solution.

Lens-based refractive options offer an excellent alternative. These include Implantable Contact Lenses (phakic lenses), where a lens is placed inside the eye without removing the natural lens, as well as lens replacement surgery, where the natural lens is replaced with an advanced artificial lens.

What are we really looking for during an eye examination?

At the slit lamp, we assess the natural lens of the eye in detail. In the early stages, the lens may still appear clear, yet patients already experience symptoms such as difficulty with near vision, glare, or reduced visual comfort. This is often referred to as a dysfunctional lens, an early, functional change as the lens begins to age.

As the process progresses, structural changes develop and the lens becomes visibly cloudy. This is what we call a cataract.

Understanding this difference is important. Many patients wait until vision is significantly reduced, but subtle changes often begin much earlier.

If you’ve noticed changes in your vision, even if your eyes “look fine,” it may be time for a comprehensive assessment.
