TGIF!!!! Warriors don't forget to take your prophylaxis against malaria. Most people believe that mosquitoes don't cause problems in the harmattan period but this is false. Malaria when present can cause crises. Prevention is better than cure.

14/12/2023

As the harmattan/winter sets in, don't forget to keep warm and stay hydrated because cold is a very potent trigger for bone pain crises in persons with sickle cell disease.

It's World Tuberculosis Day 2023

World Tuberculosis (TB) Day is observed annually on March 24, a day in the year 1882 when Dr. Robert Koch announced his discovery of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the bacillus that causes tuberculosis (TB).

TB is a global epidemic, It's spread when a person with active TB disease in their lungs coughs or sneezes and someone else inhales the expelled droplets, which contain TB bacteria.

The risk of infection can be reduced by using a few simple precautions:
*Ensure proper ventilation: as TB can remain suspended in the air for several hours with no ventilation.

*Observe good hygiene: covering the mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing reduces the spread of TB bacteria.

If Cough persist for 2 weeks or more go for TB screening.

Stay healthy

Together we can end TB!

SCD AND FATIGUE

Fatigue in sickle cell anemia is said to be as a result of insufficient oxygen reaching muscles and other tissues.

Red blood cells usually live for about 120 days before they need to be replaced. But sickle cells typically die in 10 to 20 days, leaving a shortage of red blood cells (anemia). Without enough red blood cells, the body can't get enough oxygen and this causes fatigue.

Easy Remedy for Fatigue

Low-intensity aerobic exercises are the best options for people with SCD because in the process more oxygen is absorbed. One of these exercises include -Brisk walking or hiking.

Fatigued?
Do well to take a Walk Today💪

SCD AND JAUNDICE

What is Jaundice?

Jaundice is a common early symptom of sickle cell disease (SCD). The type of jaundice observed in SCD is the Acute fulminant cholestatic jaundice.

It happens when the rate of production of bilirubin is much higher than its excretion in people with sickle cell disease due to the short life span of the red blood cells. Free hemoglobin, a protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen throughout the body, gets converted to a pigment that collects and turns the skin and eyes yellow.
Jaundice can lead to serious complication including organ damage

*Help Tips*
The following tips may help to reduce the yellowing of eyes:

-Stay hydrated.

-Consume enough dietary fiber, which can be found in whole fruits, vegetables, beans, legumes, and whole grains.

-Eat lean protein, such as that from fish, nuts, and legumes.

-Avoid processed or packaged foods.

- Contact a doctor or health care provider as soon as possible.

SCD AND BLOOD CLOTS

Sickled red blood cells increases the rate of blood clotting, which increases a person’s chance of developing a blood clot in a deep vein called deep vein thrombosis (DVT). This commonly occurs in the leg, thigh, pelvis, and arm. When a DVT breaks off and travels to the lungs it causes pulmonary embolism (PE). A DVT and PE can cause serious illness, disability, and in some cases, death.

* Symptoms of Deep Vien Thrombosis*
People with a Deep Vien thrombosis may not experience symptoms, but the most common signs and symptoms of a DVT that occur in the affected part of the body include:

-Swelling
-Pain or tenderness
-Redness of the skin

N/B: Pulmonary embolism can occur without any symptoms of Deep Vien thrombosis.

Signs and symptoms of Pulmonary embolism can include:

*Difficulty breathing
* Irregular heartbeat
*Chest pain or discomfort that worsens with a deep breath or cough
*Cough or coughing up blood
*Very low blood pressure
* Fainting

Seek medical attention immediately if you experience any of these symptoms.
