Chancroid is a s*xually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the bacterium . Periodic outbreaks of chancroid have occurred in the US, usually in minority populations in the inner cities.

Chancroid is also known as soft chancre, soft sore, and soft ulcer..

It is characterized by painful necrotizing ge***al ulcers that may be accompanied by inguinal lymphadenopathy. It is a highly contagious but curable disease..

This disease is common in sub-Saharan Africa among men who have frequent contact with .


Chancroid is a bacterial infection caused by the fastidious Gram-negative streptobacillus Haemophilus ducreyi. This pathogen is highly infectious[Waugh, 1983].


H. ducreyi enters skin through microabrasions incurred during s*xual in*******se. The incubation period of H.ducreyi infection is 10 to 14 days after which there is progression of the disease(Waugh, 1983)..

A local tissue reaction A local tissue reaction leads to development of erythomatous papule, which progresses to pustule in 4–7 days. It then undergoes central necrosis to ulcerated (Current Medical Diagnosis and Treatment Of STDs, 2007 pp 69-74).


The infection begins with the appearance of painful open sores on the ge***als, sometimes accompanied by swollen, tender lymph nodes in the groin. These symptoms occur within a week after exposure. Symptoms in women are often less noticeable and may be limited to painful urination or defecation, painful in*******se, re**al bleeding, or vaginal discharge.
