The tradition of Ash Wednesday dates back to the early Christian church, with the exact origin unknown. However, it's believed to have started in the 10th century as a way to prepare for Easter ¹.

During Ash Wednesday services, ashes are blessed and distributed to worshippers, typically in the shape of a cross on the forehead. These ashes are usually made from the palm branches of the previous year's Palm Sunday celebrations ¹ ³.
