Your animals and ticks

Ticks are parasites that suck blood by attaching themselves to animals and humans.
As a result of their parasitic nature, they benefit from their host but are detrimental to them.

Ticks transmit a wide range of disease-causing agents(microbes) to their host.
In severe cases of tick infestation, there is a lot of blood loss. This can lead to anaemia and death.
There could also be secondary infections at their feeding sites on the body.
Ticks could also cause paralysis and death as a result of the toxins they secrete.

Another interesting thing about ticks is that they can also attach themselves to humans, suck their blood and transmit diseases to them, many of which are serious.

It is extremely important to prevent your animals from getting ticks and to also eradicate them when they get it.

Watch out for the prevention and eradication of ticks in our next post.

Motion sickness could be psychological or physical.

1. Psychological motion sickness occurs because your dog has associated getting in the car with stress and anxiety. So, he ends up vomiting anytime you travel.

Physical motion sickness occurs more in puppies than adult dogs because the structure that regulates balance in their inner ear is not fully developed.

Remedies for Motion sickness
1. Make the car comfortable for your dog. This can be done by lowering the car windows a bit for fresh air to come in and making the car well ventilated and quiet during the journey.

2. Withhold food from your dog a few hours before travel.

3. If your dog has associated being in the car with stress and anxiety, you will have to do the following:
-Spend some time with your dog in the car when the engine is off.
-Take several short trips before you go on a long one to help them get accustomed to it.
- Give your dog a special toy they only have access to in the car, this enables them to start associating being in the car with fun.

Why you shouldn't bathe your dog everyday.

Dogs unlike humans do not need a bath everyday.

A dog's skin secretes some natural oils. Constant bathing depletes them and this could diminish their coat quality, making their furs dry and itchy, exposing them to some skin conditions.

Generally, these can determine the frequency of your dog's bath:

1. Does your dog play outside, wallow in the mud or roll on the floor?

2. Is your dog smelly?

3. Does your dog have long hair or short hair?
Long-haired dogs require more frequent baths than short-haired ones.

4. Does your dog have skin problems or allergies?
These may require them to bath regularly with medicated shampoo.

Usually, a dog should not be bathed more than once a month.

Even with all these listed above, ensure you don't bathe your dog more than once in two weeks.

Things to check when you want to buy a dog.

1. Purpose
Your reason for wanting to get a dog will greatly influence the breed of dog to get. Do you want the dog for companionship or security?
For security, breeds like the Boerboel, Rottweiler, German shepherd, Pitbull, Caucasian, Doberman are good.
For companionship, breeds like Pug, Lhasa Apso, Chihuahua, American Eskimo are good.

2. Size
Your dog size preference also matters. Do you want a big, medium or miniature sized breed?

Large-sized breeds like the Boerboel, Rottweiler, German shepherd, Doberman, Saint Bernard, Cane Corso and Caucasian.

Medium-sized breeds like Pitbull, American Eskimo, Bulldog.

Miniature breeds like Chihuahua, Pug, Lhasa Apso and Shih Tzu.

3. Your budget
Dogs are wonderful and high-valued animals. You might want to check your budget before choosing a particular breed. Some dog breeds are more expensive than others.

4. Children at home.
When you have children at home, this a big factor to look into before getting a dog. Most breeds are known to play with kids while there are some that are not so tolerant.
Look out for breeds like the Chihuahua, Chow Chow, Rottweiler and Pitbull. If you have them, you must exercise care with the children.

5. The condition of your house.
Do you have space in your compound? Are there other people living there? Large breeds require a big space to keep them. Miniature/toy breeds can be kept in the house. The dog's temperament has to be considered if there are other people living in the compound.

6. Cost of management
Keeping a dog is expensive. From the cost of acquiring them, to their feeding, housing, treatment and supplies. Dogs also require attention and care from you. You must be prepared to have a dog.

What you need to know about dog vaccination.

Vaccination is the use of antigens to stimulate immune response to a disease. In essence, the purpose of vaccination is to introduce an inactivated or killed version of the disease-causing microorganism to the animal's body in order to protect them from coming down with the disease.

For dogs, there are 2 vaccines of essence in Nigeria:

1. DHLPP vaccine
Canine distemper, Hepatitis, Leptospirosis, Parainfluenza and Parvovirus antigens. These are all administered at once. Usually, 3 shots are administered at 3 weeks interval after which a yearly booster is given. It is usually commenced at 6 or 8 weeks of age.

2. Antirabies vaccine- This protects from the deadly rabies disease. It is administered from 3 months upward after which a yearly booster is given.

First-time dog owner? Check these for tips on how to care for your dog.

1. Ensure your home is safe for your dog. Keep all sharp objects, wires or poisonous substances away to prevent injury or poisoning. Avoid having bushes in your compound, they harbour ticks which transmit diseases and feed on blood. Maintain good hygiene to improve your pet's health.

2. Get your pet gears- collar, leash, chain and feeding bowl for easy handling and feeding.

3. Get your pet food- dry food, can food, rice, noodles, etc...

4. Get your pet care products- shampoo/soap, cream, combs and brushes for long-haired breeds. These are for pet skin and coat care to protect from skin infections and matted hair.

5. Get a Veterinarian. Your dogs health is important. Take your dog for regular medical checkup, deworming and vaccination by your vet. This greatly reduces your pet's chances of falling sick.
