Quinoa: Can I Feed My Baby Quinoa?

Quinoa (pronounced keen-wah) is the seed of a green vegetable that looks like Spinach.

It's a small grain, light in color and round in shape similar in appearance to Sesame seed(benne seed).

It comes in colors such as purple, red and black and is prepared in similar ways like Rice and other Grains. You can get it from major malls(except it's common in your local market)

Quinoa is a superfood which can be given to babies in many different ways. It's a wholesome food for babies with many amazing benefits.

Quinoa can be introduced to babies from 8months and above.

Here are the major benefits!

🍚Quinoa is a complete protein source containing all nine essential amino acids critical for building immunity, muscle growth and repair.

🍚Quinoa is a powerhouse of B-Vitamins which is important to your baby's physical and mental development.

🍚It is also a good source of Calcium, phosphorus, magnesium (crucial for bone growth), Iron and Omega3, 6, 9 fatty acids (for brain development).

🍚It contains antioxidants. Antioxidants helps the body fight cell damage.

🍚It is high in fiber and helps reduce constipation.

This is an amazing grain that should be added to your baby's diet, don't you think so?

NB: Once you buy, wash it under running water to get rid of all bitterness and soak it before you use it for your baby food.

I will drop a simple quinoa recipe tomorrow 😋

Food Safety :Foods To Avoid

Infants and young children under 5 years old are vulnerable to food borne illnesses because they have weaker immune systems than Adults

Their stomachs also produce less acids making it easier for harmful germs to cause harm in their bodies.

This could make food poisoning dangerous for them.

So what foods can we avoid especially when introducing solid foods to our babies?

Here are some👇

🍗Raw or undercooked meat, fish and shellfish

🥚Raw or partially cooked Eggs or foods containing raw Eggs e.g homemade mayonnaise, ice-cream.

🍶All unpasteurized foods and beverages including raw milk, cheese and other dairy foods made from unpasteurized milk.

🍹Unpasteurized fruit juices(Check the label) except if you have freshly squeezed them yourself.

🍯Honey to under 12 months old to avoid the risk of botulism.

🥜Hard, small, round and/or sticky solid foods to prevent choking e.g nuts popcorn, raw carrots, hotdogs, whole grapes, etc.

What other foods can you avoid?

3 Amazing Benefits of Oatmeal for your Baby.

Oats is a versatile grain.

You can hardly go wrong with it. Asides it's versatility, it is a very nutritious grain packed with Fiber, Protein and Vitamins.

Oatmeal is a great first food for babies and can be combined with any fruit, veggie or meat.

It can be introduced to a baby at the start of their weaning Journey ie at 6 months. Infact it is believed that Oats are better than Rice Cereal

Here are 3 major health benefits your Little one can enjoy from Oatmeal.

🍌 It aids constipation. Oats contains a high amount of fiber which helps to relieve constipation. Oats are easily digestible by babies.

🥑 Oats contain a high amount of Protein and fats than most whole grains.

These nutrients help boost your baby's immunity and improve the appearance of their hair and skin.

They also help with healthy weight gain and muscle mass.

🍆Oats contain minerals like Calcium, phosphorus, iron, potassium, sodium and vitamins.

These minerals are helpful in bone, muscle, brain and Spinal cord development as well as help improve the immune system.

Oats should be grinded into fine powder for smaller babies before making it.

Brown or White :Which is Best for Your Baby?

Rice cereal is a great baby's first food and a staple in most homes especially white rice.

Rice cereal is a safe place to start as it contains no allergens. It's also easy to pair with a variety of veggies and meat for good taste;

But which is better? Brown Rice or White Rice?

All Rice contains Carbohydrates with small amounts of protein and practically no fat.

While Brown Rice is a whole grain still having all parts of its grain including the fibrous bran, the nutritious germ and the carb-rich endosperm,

White Rice, on the other hand, has been stripped of its bran and germ which is the most nutritious part of the grain.

This leaves white rice with very few essential nutrients which is why Brown Rice is usually considered much healthier than white(Healthline).

Here are some benefits of brown rice over white

🌾Brown Rice has more fiber and antioxidants.

If your baby is suffering from constipation, then Fibre-rich brown rice can help loosen up the stool.

🌾Brown Rice is also rich in B Vitamins, Manganese, Selenium and Magnesium.

These nutrients help your baby's body and brain develop.

For 6months Olds, try this simple recipe.

Ingredients
🌰1/2 cup Brown Rice Powder
🍌1 Banana/Apple Sauce
🥛1/2 cup Breast Milk/Formula

Preparation
🥘Boil one cup of water in a pot and add your Rice powder.

🥘Stir continuously and allow to cook. Occasionally stir every 3-5 minutes to prevent lumps until it's thick and slightly darker brown.

🥘Bring down, stir in your banana mash/Apple sauce. Add the Milk and it's ready!

For older Babies, try stir-fry Veggies(carrots, peas, onions, corn, etc) with Brown Rice. You can add Chicken/Beef.

Whether in the form of cereal or stir-frys, Brown Rice will add fiber, protein and micronutrients to your Child's diet.

Help them develop a taste for whole grains by serving brown rather than white as often as possible.

Note:Brown Rice can be blended dry and kept in an airtight container in the fridge. Always wash, sun dry and slightly roast before dry milling.
