COMMUNIQUÉ ISSUED AT THE END OF THE EMERGENCY GENERAL MEETING OF THE NIGERIAN MEDICAL ASSOCIATION, OGUN STATE BRANCH, HELD VIRTUALLY VIA ZOOM WORKPLACE BETWEEN TUESDAY, 27TH AUGUST 2024 AND THURSDAY, 29TH AUGUST 2024.

BACKGROUND

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Ogun State Branch, is actively pursuing wage parity between Ogun State healthcare institutions and their federal counterparts, as well as advocating for the overall welfare of its members. The association has been on strike for 25 days, affecting doctors employed by state-owned healthcare facilities. The emergency general meeting was convened on Tuesday, 27th August, 2024 where deliberations were made on the industrial disharmony in the State, the congress went on recess and reconvened on Thursday 29th August, 2024. The purpose of the meeting was to assess the situation, review the strike's progress, present a comprehensive report to Congress on engagements with the Ogun State government, and make a decision on the strike action.

OBSERVATIONS
1. The association remains on strike due to the Ogun State government's failure to implement the reviewed CONMESS wage, which federal counterparts began receiving in June 2023.
2. Despite NMA executives' efforts, the issue remains unresolved.
3. The Congress reviewed the strike's effectiveness and members’ compliance.
4. The Congress acknowledges the hardship caused to the people of Ogun State due to the government's failure to respond to doctors' demands.
5. The Congress notes the mediatory roles played by notable figures and parts of the government to resolve the matter.

RESOLUTIONS

After extensive discussions, the Congress resolved:
1. To suspend the ongoing strike action for four weeks to allow for peaceful dialogue and deliberation with the government, considering the hardship faced by the public.
2. Members are to resume duties at 8:00 AM on Monday, 2nd September 2024.
3. The government is urged to meet the association's demands during this 4-week suspension to avert further industrial disharmony.
4. The association will reconvene on 30th September, 2024 to review the situation, and industrial harmony cannot be guaranteed if demands remain unmet.

Ogun Doctors Suspend Strike after 25 Days for Further Consultations with Stakeholders

The Nigerian Medical Association, Ogun State branch, has agreed to suspend its 25-day strike to allow for consultations and negotiations with stakeholders. The decision was made during an emergency virtual meeting held on Thursday afternoon.

The strike, which began on August 3, 2024, was called off to enable negotiations with the state government regarding pay disparity among state-employed doctors and their federal counterparts. The association's chairman, Dr. Ogunjimi Luqman, emphasized that the suspension is not a withdrawal from the strike but rather a strategic move to re-strategize and press home their demands for payment of the reviewed CONMESS and improved healthcare delivery in the state.

The congress unanimously agreed to suspend the strike for four weeks, with a reconvening set for October 1, 2024, at 8:00 a.m. for appraisal and potential commencement of a full-blown strike. Striking doctors are expected to resume work by 8:00 a.m. on September 1, 2024.

Dr. Ogunjimi assured that all members will be involved in decisions affecting their welfare and promised to write a letter and communique to the government to reopen negotiations for immediate payment of the reviewed CONMESS.

He thanked the congress for their perseverance and assured that their efforts will not be in vain.

*Ogun Doctors Continue 19-day old Strike as Doctors Decry Unjustly Treatment and Insincerity By the State Government*

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) Ogun State Branch has again called for the immediate payment of revised CONMESS for medical Doctors working in the State.

The Doctors began an indefinite strike on the 3rd of August 2024 after a congress decision which was to address movement of Medical Doctors from state to Federal owned Institutions due to pay disparity with their colleagues in federal institutions in the State.

The Chairman, Dr Luqman Ogunjimi while taking updates from different affiliates heads of the State NMA also addressed the congress on the progress that has been achieved as mandated during the last congress.

The Congress vehemently rejected the proposal of the government to delay the revised CONMESS till the State begins payment of minimum wage, it was resolved that revised CONMESS and minimum wage are different things entirely and shouldn’t be muddled together for purpose of posterity.

The Emergency General Meeting which lasted 4hrs was brought to conclusion that the strike should continue to give room for more engagement with the State Government.

The congress also registered her displeasure with the insincerity from the Government side. However, while the strike is ongoing the congress through the SOC is open to dialogue to ensure resolution of the impasse.

A strike management committee was instituted to ensure strict compliance of the strike and deal with erring members.

The Chairman alongside the SOC promised to be open for discussion with Government and all other stakeholders involved.

NMA Ogun Continues 11-day old Strike, Admonishes Members to Ensure Total Compliance

Medical Doctors under the employ of the Ogun State Government and the Ogun branch of the Medical Association NMA have continued their industrial action which is primarily aimed at addressing the pay disparity between federal and state medical Doctors.

It will be recalled that the Medical Doctors commenced a strike action on Saturday 3rd August, 2024 after a congress decision. Since then, various discussion, consultations and engagement have been held between the association, government and stakeholders.

The newly elected Chairman, Dr Luqman Ogunjimi during an Emergency OGM held on 14th August, 2024 briefed members of the association about the recent engagement with the government but was resolute with the decision of the congress to press home our demands.

He further stressed that the Government was keen to pay the reviewed CONMESS and other demands but with a clause which the association and its congress members are critically reviewing.

After much deliberations, the association agreed to continue with the strike and engagement with all stakeholders. He also said a strike monitoring team will visit various health facilities to ensure total compliance to the strike.

The congress went on recess and will re-convene in 72 hours as all affiliate heads are expected to give appraisals and updates.
