Vitamin A is a fat soluble vitamin. It is needed for the proper growth and functioning of many parts of the body.
Vitamin A benefits cuts across various areas including the eyes,skin(rather than applying chemicals) and immune system.
Vitamin A is used for aging skin,acne,cataracts, child development, and infections. They maintain surface tissues such as your skin, intestine,lungs, bladder,inner ear and also support male and female reproductive system.
Diets high in carotenoids (vitamin A) are associated with a lower risk of conditions such as heart disease, lung cancer and diabetes.
Deficiency of VITAMIN A ;
Lack of vitamin A , causes
1. Preventable Blindness as declared by WHO
2. Increase risk of infection like measles and diarrhea
3. Raises risks of anemia in pregnant women
4. Slows down development of fetus
Food sources
Food sources can be gotten in Animal sources as preformed vitamin A,and plant sources as provitamin A (beta carotenoids)
Though preformed vitamin A is absorbed into the body easily, it is recommended that provitamin A be eaten more frequently and larger amount.
TOXICITY
There is a recommended dietary allowance for men -900mcg and female-700g
Upper tolerable intake of -3000mcg
Excess intake can lead to
1. Vision disturbance
2. Joint and bone pain
3. Poor appetite
4. Hair loss
