Endometriosis is a common medical condition affecting many women in their fertile years (between the first and last menstrual period). It is defined as the presence of the kind of tissue that normally lines the inside of the womb (endometrial tissue) outside its normal location in the womb (uterus). The tissue responds to hormones that affect the menstrual cycle the same way that endometrial tissue does. It swells and bleeds but unlike the normal me**es, it cannot leave the body. It is not cancerous, but it causes scarring and adhesions which can lead to changes in the reproductive organs.

Symptoms

Some women are asymptomatic while others have mild to severe forms of the disease. The symptoms include lower abdominal pain radiating to the back and legs and might be accompanied by nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea. It also manifests as unusual bleeding, painful periods and pain during or after in*******se and infertility.

Causes

The aetiology of endometriosis is not yet fully understood but there are various theories being considered. According to one of them, retrograde menstruation has been implicated in the development of the disease. It means blood flows backwards through the fallopian tubes into the pelvis instead of out of the va**na during menstruation. Other theories are hereditary factors and a problem with the immune system which usually makes sure that tissue from a particular organ doesn’t grow elsewhere in the body.

Impact

Severe endometriosis can be incapacitating and affect almost every aspect of a woman’s life. The chronic pain which they suffer often affect how they feel about themselves as women because they’re unable to carry out their usual everyday activities or pursue their hobbies. Painful s*x can make it difficult for a woman to enjoy her s*xuality and infertility is not uncommon in severe cases. All these factors may lead to strained relationships, hamper work performance and may cause low self-esteem.
